The collier brig Sicily (oil on canvas)

Scott, John A formal, broadside ship portrait of the Sicily leaving the Tyne, in a fair wind. Her mainsail is partly-furled and the luff of the spanker (aftermost sail) has been hoisted up to give free wind to the well-drawing foremast canvas. Sicily looks every inch a collier, with: Bentinck boom at the foot of the foresail (for handier tacking in narrow channels); snow-rigged mainmast (with trysail mast abaft the main); deep, triple-reefing topsails; gallery on deck (the 'shed' in front of the foremast); ship's boat stowed on the hatches; and, as favoured by some owners, a row of 'painted ports' along the topsides.
