Prosthetics Plastic hip joint and blood vessel, c 1985. These are two of the increasing number of plastic joints used in replacement surgery. Their main advantage to patients and surgeons, is that the body does not reject them as foreign material. The hip replacement has a steel shaft, and a joint made from molecular weight polyethylene. The replacement blood vessel is knitted from a Dacron polyester. Made by Howmedica. ©SSPL/Science Museum
