John Blow Memorial, Westminster Abbey. Engraving of the marble memorial sculpture in Westminster Abbey to John Blow. Engraving by Benjamin Cole. On the top is an eternal flame with a skull, with drapery folds. The wording in the central cartouche reads: 'Here lies the Body of John Blow, Doctor in Musick, Who was Organist, Composer and Master of the Children of the Chapel Royal, for the space of 35 Years. In the Reigns of K. Charles the 2nd, K. James the 2nd, K. William and Q. Mary and Her present Majesty Q. Anne. And also Organist of this Collegiate Church, about 15 years. He was Scholar to ye excellent Musician Dr Christopher Gibbons and Master to the famous Mr H. Purcell and most of the Eminent Masters in Music since. He died Oc'tob ye 1st 1708 in ye 60th year of his age. His own Musical Compositions, (Especially his Church-Musick), are a far nobler Monument to his Memory than any other can be ra'is'd for Him'. Below the cartouche is an open page of music entitled 'A Canon of 4 parts in One by Dr John Blow'. Decorated with rose and acanthus, with two putti. Inscribed below: 'John Blow, Doctr. in Musick', B. Cole sculp. 23 February 1649 1 October 1708.
