Image description

Daniel Mytens the elder Oil painting on canvas, Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham (1536-1624) (Lord Howard of Effingham), aged 84 , inscribed near the hat Aetatis Suae 84, Aº. 1620 A full-length portrait, standing, with shipping at sea in the background. Howard was Lord High Admiral of England under Queen Elizabeth I and commanded the English fleet against the Spanish Armada. His portrait was acquired by Charles Winn from a dealer Dr Oxley, as the work of the 16th Century Italian master, Frederico Zuccaro, in 1830. It formed part of Charles' collection of famous British men and women and was particularly recommended by his cousin, Arthur Strickland, because it was engraved in `Houbraken's Illustrious Heads', which was used as a pattern book by many collectors of ‘British Worthies'.
