Image description

Artist: The Mortlake Tapestry Manufactory; After: Andrea Mantegna (1431–1506) Caesar on his chariot of triumph, riding past a triumphal arch crowned with trophies of Armour and Sculpture, the winged figure of Fame holding a garland stands behind him, the side with a panel depicting Neptune, Mars and Ceres, a spear held by a youth suspending a garland inscribed 'Veni, Vidi, Vici', one of the group blowing a trumpet inscribed 'Caesar P.M.' [Pontifex Maximus], double-shield to right-hand outer slip. From a set of three Charles II Mortlake tapestries depicting the Triumph of Julius Caesar with added borders of trophies of armour, helmets, breastplates, pikes, maces, etc. with double-eagles in the angles and the middle of the top borders, each panel bearing the Mortlake shield mark, each reduced at the bottom above the borders. After designs by Mantegna, from the cartoons at Hampton Court, this set was probably produced in 1670. Woven at Mortlake for Ralph, Duke of Montagu for Montagu House, Bloomsbury.
