The mirror on the wall in this scene reflects the feet of the artist. J F Lewis travelled to Constantinople, now known as Istanbul, in Turkey in 1840. The picture would have been created with models and props, as Lewis would not have been allowed in women's living areas. Lewis's stunningly detailed Middle-Eastern scenes were very popular with collectors in Britain. In this picture, Lewis mixed gum with red pigment to intensify the colour. Unfortunately, this has since caused flaking, which cannot be treated without changing the colour;
