Constellation of the Great Dog - Constellation of Canis Major - Sirius, the bright star on this image is the brightest star in the sky. Canis Major (the Greater Dog) is one of two dogs accompanying Orion the hunter across the sky. The other is Canis Minor. The constellation figure is ancient, and was one of 48 constellations mentioned by Ptolemy (83 - 161 AD), no doubt reflecting earlier ideas. The modern stick figure joining the brightest stars (above) certainly has a very doggy appearance. The brightest star in the sky is here, Sirius, the Dog Star, so called because its emanations were thought to affect dogs in the heat of summer, the 'Dog Days' when the star is in the same part of the sky as the Sun. Sirius is bright because it is only 8.6 light years from the Sun and it is in any case it is an intrinsically bright star, 25 times more luminous than the Sun

Orion Constellation - Constellation of Orion - Orion the Hunter is one of the most familar and best known constellations. There is extensive and varied mythology about this beautiful collection of stars, but the most common Greek legend has Orion as a giant huntsman, and he appears in this role in Homer's Odyssey. The most persistent legend seems to be that he died from the sting of a giant scorpion, which was placed in the sky so that Orion sets as the Scorpius rises, in an eternal chase across the sky. The momorable outline of the Hunter proudly bestrides the celestial equator and is equally visible from both hemispheres. The distinctive, equally spaced line of stars of Orion's Belt are more or less on the equator and are framed by quartet of bright and colourful stars. More subtle is Orions short sword, hanging from his belt. Under dark skies or in binoculars the central 'star' is distinctly misty. This is the famous Orion nebula, one of many well known telescopic objects that fill this part of the sky. The westernmost Orion Belt star delta Orionis (Minkata) is about a quarter of a degree of arc south of the celestial equator and all three belt stars are within 2 degrees of it. This means they rise and set due east or west of the observer and track the equator across the sky during the night, tracing straight lines in star trail photographs. Note that Orion is upside down as seen from the southern hemisphere, where it is often called 'the saucepan', with the Belt stars forming the base and the Sword stars the handle

Constellations of Gemels and Little Dog - Constellations of Gemini and Canis Minor - Constellation of Gemels with bright stars Castor and Pollux. Below is the small constellation of the Little Dog, with the bright star Procyon. Canis Minor (the Lesser Dog) is sometimes regarded as the smaller of the two dogs of Orion the hunter. It is minor indeed, just 185 degrees square, and 71st in size of the 88 modern constellations. The most obvious and interesting object Canis Minor is its main star, the pale yellow Procyon. Its name is from the Greek, meaning 'before the dog', since it rises before the Sirius, the Dog Star. Gemini (the Twins) is a much more interesting collection of stars, easily visualised as two figures holding hands, their heads represented by the stars Castor and Pollux. The constellation is an ancient zodiacal construction, with a rich mythology vanishing in the mists of time. It is from the direction of Gemini (near Castor) that annual Geminid meteor showers radiate, around December 14

Constellation of Sextant - Constellation of Sextans - Constellation of Sextant; below part of the constellation Hydra. At the top of the picture, the bright star is Regulus, of the Lion. Sextans, and part of Hydra. Top of image, the bright star is Regulus in Leo. Sextans, (the Sextant, originally Sextans Uraniae), is small, faint, equatorial constellation south of Leo, framed by the bright stars Regulus to the north and Alphard to the west. It was introduced by Johannes Hevelius in 1687 to commemorate the instrument with which he continued to measure star positions for long after the telescope had been invented. This small and insignificant constellation measures a little more than 17 degrees on a side (about 313 degrees square) and is ranked 45th in area out of the 88 modern constellations. In contrast is the winding collection of stars that make up the head of the Hydra, the Water Snake. This is the largest constellation in the sky, extending over 1300 square degrees, and though the stars that make up the head are rather faint, they are together on the sky and quite distinctive
Pisces Constellation - Constellation of Pisces - Pisces (the Fishes) is a large constellation of mostly quite faint stars at the edge of an ancient and huge part of the sky known as 'the Sea'. Pisces is said to resemble two fish, which are tied to a (alpha) Piscium by long lines. Alpha Piscium is known as Al Rischa in English, where it means 'the cord'. Some Greek mythologies have two men tethered to this star, though some of the other stars have fishy names. The Sun is in Pisces from March 13 to April 19, and it crosses the ecliptic on March 21, which marks the vernal Equinox, the first day of autumn in the southern hemisphere. This used to be called the first point in Aries, but precession has now moved it into Pisces. However, this point in the sky is the origin of right ascension (RA) in the astronomical equatorial coordinate sytem, and because it moves with precession, RA and Dec are defined at a certain date
Constellation of Sobieski's ECU - Constellation of Scutum - Scutum (The Shield) was originally Scutum Sobiescianum, Sobieski's Shield, and was introduced in 1690 by the astronomer/cartographer Johannes Hevelius, one - time mayor of Gdansk (Danzig), in honour of Polish warrior - King John Sobieski. King John distiguished himself in defending his land against the Turks in 1683, turning them back at the gates of Vienna. For this he was hailed by the Pope and others as the savior of Vienna and Western European Civilization. Scutum was created in honor of this victory, and alpha Scuti named Ioannina (Greek for John) in his honor. Scutum is small, 84th in size out of the 88 modern constellation. It contains no bright stars, and seems to have been carved out of adjoining Aquila and Serpens simply embrace a fine piece of the Milky Way. However, the open clusters M11 and M26 can be found here
Flying Fish Constellation - Constellation of Volans - Flying Fish is a small constellation in the southern hemisphere. The bright star on its left is Miaplacidus, in Carene. Volans was introduced by Johann Bayer in 1603 as Piscis Volans, the Flying Fish and in old star atlases is seen flying alongside the ancient sailing ship Argo Navis. However, the fish has flown and only the adjective Volans (flying) remains. The stars form a distinctive pattern but at magnitudes between 3.7 and 4.0 they are not bright. On the other hand the constellation is easily found between the bright stars Avior (epsilon Carinae) and Miaplacidus (beta Carinae) with the fish apparently flying towards the LM
Constellation of the Little Bear - Constellation of Ursa Minor - At the top of the picture, the polar star. Ursa Minor (the Little Bear) is intimately linked to Polaris, the North Star which may be found at the end of the trail of stars that look like the Little Dipper. Ursa Minor does not appear have any mythology associated with it, rather it was first mentioned in the 6th century B.C. by Thales of Miletus as a navigational aid for Phoenician sailors. On the other hand, in the mythology of Ursa Major, two bears were flung into the sky by their tails by Zeus, in a fit of jealousy. The throw was so violent that the bear's tails were elongated
Constellation of Giraffe - Constellation of Camelopardalis - Below, the constellation of Coach with the bright star Capella. Camelopardalis (the Giraffe, sometimes given as Camelopardis) is aptly named, both for the stick figure outlined above, which hints the outline of a giraffe's legs and sloping back, and for huge extent of constellation as it wanders over the North Celestial Pole, covering over 70 degrees. This meandering construction is probably the work of the Dutch astronomer Petrus Plancius in about 1613 and for its size (757 square degrees) it contains remarkably few bright stars

Triangle Constellation and Andromede Galaxy - Constellation of Triangulum with Andromeda galaxy - The constellation Triangle is a small constellation in the northern hemisphere, not far from the Andromede galaxy. Triangulum is one of the 48 constellations noted by Ptolemy and is one of the smallest of the modern star groupings codified in the 1930s. However, the most obvious triangle in this image joins the surrounding trio of yellow - orange stars, Almak, Mirach and Hamal, in which Triangulum is nicely placed. Of course almost any three stars can form a triangle but these two, one inside the other, make quite a distinctive asterism
Comete 17P/Holmes 26/10/2007 - Comet 17P/Holmes October 26 2007 - On October 24, 2007, Comete 17P/Holmes suddenly increased luminosite (almost a million times) and became visible to the naked eye. In this image obtained on 26 October 2007, the comet is surrounded above the constellation of Persee. On the top right, a view of the comet at the telescope. On Oct. 24, 2007 Comet Holmes amazingly erupted to magnitude 2.5, nearly a million times brighter than it's magnitude 17 brightness 24 hours before. This is one of the most stunning cometary events in modern history of Astronomy. The comet is so far away that appeared star like in this image of Oct. 26 from Tehran. The inset is a telescopic view of the comet yellowish coma
Constellations of Dove and Lievre - Constellations of Columba and Lepus - Constellations of Dove (near the horizon) and Lievre (above). The bright star on the left is Sirius. Columba (originally Columba Noachi, Noah's dove) is seen here low on the horizon and easily found between Sirius and Canopus - - if you live in the southern hemisphere. It is one of the smaller and less obvious constellations, with an area of 270 square degrees. Lepus (the Hare) is about the same size as Columba and rather more obvious to the eye, lying to the south of Orion. It is one of Ptolemy's 48 constellations preserved to this day
Comete 17P/Holmes and Persee constellation - Comet 17P/Holmes and Perseus constellation - Photomontage indicating the position of the comet. In a few hours, on 24 October 2007, the comet 17P/Holmes changed from magnitude 17 (an invisible star even in a good telescope) to magnitude 3, that is, bright enough to be easily visible even in the city or on a Full Moon night. Helas, its appearance is stellar since it has no tail. Composite showing the comet position. On Oct. 24, 2007, in a few hours, a comet has brightenned from magnitude 17 (invisible in a good instrument) to magnitude 3, bright enough to be visible with naked - eyes from a city or during a Full Moon night. This comet is Holmes. Tonight, it is visible as a new star in the thigh of Perseus constellation. But it displays no tail and keep a stellar aspect
Constellations of the Compsole and the Great Dog - Constellations of Pyxis and Canis Major - Constellation of the Compsole, near the horizon, and constellation of the Great Dog with the brilliant star Sirius. Pyxis, the Mariner's Compasse was originally Pyxis Nauticus and refers to the magnetic compasset. It is a small, insignificant arrangement of faint stars surrounded by much more eyecatching patterns of stars. Pyxis was once part of the very large constellation Argo Navis, the ship Argo, which carried Jason and the Argonauts. Argo Navis is now obsolete, but it was listed in Ptolemy's star catalogue, the Almagest. When the constellation boundaries were defined by the International Astronomical Union in the 1930s it was the only one of Ptolemy's 48 constellations that was not accepted. Instead, it was divided into the four constellations introduced by the French cleric and astronomer Nicolas de Lacaille in the 1750s: Carina, the keel, Puppis the stern, Vela the sails, and Pyxis. La Caille originally called this part of Argo Navis Malus, the Mast, which is rather more appropriate since the ancient Greeks did not use the magnetic compasse, and such compasse are not usually used on a ship's mast. However, alpha Pixidis, is sometimed known by its Arabic name Al Sumut, meaning “” the way””. This word is the origin of azimuth, a directional coordinate on the horizon
Constellation Ophiuchus - Constellation of Ophiuchus - The constellation Ophiuchus separates the constellation of the Snake into two parts. The constellation of Ophiuchus is located between Serpens Caput and Serpens Cauda, two parts of the constellation of Serpens. The southern part of Ophiuchus contains one of the darkest and most visually distinctive dark clouds of the Miky Way. It is popularly known as the Dark Horse nebula - - the body of the horse runs north - south and its legs point towards the bright star Antares. The hind quarters of the horse make up the (smoker's) Pipe nebula, with the stem pointing to Antares. The dust of forelegs reaches a long way in the direction of Antares, where it is illuminated by stars associated with Rho Ophiuchi to make a distinctive reflection nebula. The dusty clouds of the Dark Horse nebula hide the northern part of the Milky Way's central bulge. The southern part (in Sagittarius) is relatively unobscured. Without this dust the extent of the Milky Way's bulge would be much more apparent to the unaided eye and without it our understanding of the nature of our galaxy as a flattened disk might have come sooner
Constellation of the Dolphin - Constellation of Delphinus - Constellations of the Dolphin and Altair. On the top right, the constellation of the Fleche, on the left, the Dolphin; on the bottom right, the brilliant star Altair in the Eagle. Delphinus the Dolphin looks remarkably like the creature it represents. Delphinus is a small constellation of Greek origin, but despite its diminutive size it is quite easy to find. The bright star Altair in neighboring Aquila is probably the best guide. Delphinus' brightest star, Rotanev (ss Del) is of magnitude 4, and its name honors the astronomer Nicolaus Venator (Rotonov backwards). The next brightest star in Delphinus is Sualocin, which at first glance appears English, but is Nicolaus spelled backwards. He was assistant to the rather more famous Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi. The main stars of Sagitta are also well seen here
Constellations of Telescope, Altar and Southern Crown - Constellations of Telescopium, Ara and Corona Australis - The Telescope is a small constellation of the southern hemisphere located between the Southern Crown (at the top) and the constellation of the Altar (at the bottom of the picture). Telescopium is a faint constellation that was named by Abbe Nicolas Louis de Lacaille during his stay at the Cape of Good Hope between 1751 and 1752. It is utterly undistinguished and is best remembered as that unremarkable piece of sky to the west of Ara and between the distinctive circlet of Corona Australis and Peacock (alpha Pavonis), the brightest star in Pavo. Lacaille's original name was Tubus Telescopium, however, in the way of antique telescopes, it was shortened for convenience

Pegase Constellation - Constellation of Pegasus - Pegasus represents a winged horse of Greek mythology, a figure that appears quite often, most spectacularly as the great winged steed of Bellerophon. The word Pegasus itself is derived from the Greek meaning 'strong'. Pegasus was the son of Neptune and Medusa the Gorgon, and sprang from the blood of his mother when her head had been severed by Perseus. Because Pegasus was considered a mortal, when he died he was placed in the heavens as a constellation by Zeus. Adjoining Pegasus is Equuleus, the foal. The most distinctive part of constellation is the Great Square of Pegasus. Its northernmost star, Sirrah, was incorparated into Andromeda when the constellation boundaries were formalized in the 1930s; it used to be delta (d) Pegasi. Because of its position in the sky, the first two objects in the New General Catalogue (NGC) appear in the Pegasus. NGC 1 and NGC 2 are distant, unremarkable galaxies, indeed this large constellation as a whole is remarkably devoid of any objects of interest to amateur astronomers, the notable exception being the globular cluster M15
Constellation Lizard - Constellation of Lacerta - Lacerta (the Lizard) was a constellation invented by the Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius in 1687. It lies boxed in on all sides by the much more interesting groupings of Cygnus, Cephus, Pegasus and Andromeda. Lacerta had no bright stars or significant deep sky objects apart from 14th magnitude star - like object BL Lac, a prototype of an unusal kind of active galaxy whose nucleus varies in brightness by a few magnitudes over several days
Whale Constellation - Constellation of Cetu
Constellations of Burin and Dove - Constellations of Caelum and Columba - Constellations of Burin (right) and Dove (left) in the southern hemisphere. The bright star at the bottom of the picture is Canopus. Caelum (originally Caelum Sculptoris, the sculptor's chisel) is a small, rather obscure constallation hewn from rather thin pickings between Eridanus and Columba by Abbe de Lacaille in the 1750s. It is only 125 degrees square, making it 81st in area out of 88 constellations. Rather more interesting to the eye is Columba (originally Columba Noachi, Noah's dove) easily found between Sirius and Canopus. It is twice the area of Caelum and contans a few brighter stars. Best seen in the early evening in January
Constellation Scorpio - Milky way and constellation of Scorpius - Scorpius is one of the few constellations whose star pattern resembles its name. The curved stinging tail is marked by the star Shahula, probably from the Arabic 'Al Shaulah' meaning 'raised tail', as seen in a scorpion. In the body of the scorpion lies Antares, meaning 'rival of Mars' for its reddish colour. The head of the scorpion is echoed in the star name Dschubba, meaning 'forehead'. However, the scorpion shape looks trucated in our photograph and it is. In ancient times it extended into what is now Libra, where the brightest stars (not seen here) still carry the resonant names Zeubenelgenubi (a1,2 Lib, the southern claw) and Zeubeneschamali (ss Lib, the northern claw). This celestial scorpion was sent by a jealous Artemis to kill Orion, who still fees the venomous insect: as Scorpius rises Orion sets, and vice - versa. However, he could not be saved even by Asclepius, the god of healing, who was later sent into the heavens as Ophiuchus, the serpent wrestler, a symbol still used by the medical profession. The constellation bestrides one of the richest parts of the southern Milky Way and is adorned by many beautiful stars. It is rich in young stars clusters and the nebulae from which they spring. Some examples are listed below. This image was a long exposure made to show the Milky Way
Lynx Constellation - Constellation of Lynx - The constellation Lynx consists of shiny stars. The image also shows the bright stars Castor and Pollux, Gemels (down right) and Capella du Coker (top right). Lynx is a modern northern constellation, created by the astronomer Hevelius in the 17th century. It wanders inconspicuously between the distinctive bright stars of Ursa Major to the east and Gemini and Auriga to the west. Lynx was supposedly named because its stars were so faint that lynx - like eyes were needed to see them
Constellation of Big Bear - Constellation of Ursa Major - The constellation of Big Bear with the constellations of Hunting Dogs and Little Lion. Ursa Major is the third largest constellation in the sky but is not seen by skywatchers in the far southern hemisphere. However, it is the most recognisable of all constellations for those who can see it, mainly because of the asterism formed by the seven brightest stars. This is known as the Big Dipper in the USA, the Plough in Britain, various kinds of carts in Europe and a range of other objects in other cultures. Not surprisingly the constellation as a whole has a rich mythology associated with it, with many peoples projecting their stories among these beautiful stars. Greatly abbreviated, one ancient Greek version has Zeus romancing Callisto. His wife Hera changed Callisto into a bear out of jealousy. Hera's son Arcus found Callisto (the bear) by chance in the forest and was about to kill her, so to save her, Zeus turned Arcus into a smaller bear (Ursa Minor), and threw the pair of them into the sky, causing their tails to be stretched. Both bears are circumpolar (visible throught the year) from latitudes north of about 10 degrees and Ursa Major is seen high above the pole star in the northern winter and below it (as in the photograph) in the summer. The two brightest stars in the constellation are Dubhe and Merak (a and ss Ursa Majoris), also known as the Pointers because a line drawn through them points to Polaris, the North Star. The main objects of amateur astronomical interest in Ursa Major are galaxies, five of which have Messier numbers
Constellation of Taurus - Constellation of Taurus - Taurus, (the Bull) is one of the most ancient constellations, and appears in artefacts as old as western civilisation itself. The bull is still a figure of strength and fertility in cultures around the world. In the sky the distinctive 'V' shape of his head and long horns tipped by beta (ss) and zeta Tau is easily recognised. If the purpose of the horns was in doubt, the English name for ss Tau is Alnath, meaning 'the butting one'. The bull's glowing red eye of Aldebaran completes the picture, and its location between the delicate Pleiades and the aggressive stance of Orion makes Taurus hard to overlook. Despite its masculine connotations, the constellation is rich in female icons; both the Hyades and Pleiades star clusters are daughters of Atlas and both are important astronomically. The Pleiades (or the Seven Sisters) are a group of young stars at a distance of about 440 light years and on long exposure photographs are seen to be embedded in dust which reflects their light as a blue haze. The Hyades is much closer, and at 150 light years distant is the nearest open cluster to the Sun. However the bright star Aldebaran is much closer (65 ly) and is a chance alignment. Without it there would be no bull in Taurus. Probably the most interesting object in Taurus is M1, the Crab nebula, the remains of a star that exploded in the year 1054BCE
Constellations of Reticulum and Dorado - Constellations of Reticulum and Dorado - Constellations of Reticulum and Bream (top) near the galaxy of the Great Magellan Cloud. Reticulum is another small and insignificant southern constellation introduced by Lacaille in the 1750s. It commemorates a reticle, the cross hairs in an eyepiece used for measuring star positions, from the Latin for 'net' (hence reticulation, network). It is best found by looking for the Large Magellanic Cloud in the adjoining constellation of Dorado. Dorado, the Goldfish or Swordfish (Xiphias), is a constellation introduced by Johann Bayer, best known for his 1603 star atlas Uranometria, which was the first to cover the entire sky. It is notable mainly for containing most of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), the nearest galaxy to the Milky Way
Comete 17P/Holmes and constellation Persee - Comet 17P/Holmes and Perseus constellation - Comet 17P/Holmes visible as a star in the middle of the Persee thigh. The Moon illuminates the clouds. In overprint, the mythological form of the Persee constellation, extracted from the Uranographia of Hevelius. Comet 17P/Holmes visible as a new star in the thigh of Perseus constellation. At right, moon is lighting clouds. Constellation Mythological form from “” Uranographia”” star atlas by Hevelius (1690) has been added
Constellation of Belier - Constellation of Aries - Constellation of Belier and clusters of Pleiades (in the Taurus). Although inconspicuous, Aries is one of the constellations of the zodiac and from ancient times has been represented by a ram, the same ram whose golden fleece was sought by Jason and the Argonauts in the great ship Argo Navis. For more than 2000 years it also of astronomical importance because it was the constellation where the Sun crossed the celestial equator (ecliptic) each year at the vernal equinox, marking the first point in Aries from which right ascension is measured. Precession has now carried this point into Pisces. The constellation is the 39th largest in the sky and covers about 440 square degrees. The best - known object in this field is the Pleiades star cluster (M45 in Taurus)
Balance Constellation - Constellation of Libra - At the bottom of the picture, the brilliant star is Antares, in the Scorpio. Libra, The Scales is an ambivalent constellation in that it was created by the Romans during the reign of Julius Caesar from the rather empty patch of sky westward of neighboring Scorpius. The ancient Greeks knew the stars of what is now Libra as the Claws of the Scorpion and the star names preserve their ancient origins. The names Zeuben Eschamali, Zeuben Elgenubi and Zeuben Elakrab are besed on the English words for northern claw, southern claw, and the scorpion's claw respectively. The Roman interpretation reflects that of ancient Egypt, where the main stars are known as the northern and southern scales, as in a balance - beam weighting device. Ptolemy and other classical writers refer to the group as both the Scales and as the Claws, and there is a link in this idea to the adjoining constellation of Virgo, where the female figure is sometimes shown as holding the Scales of Justice. Libra is a constellation of the Zodiac, the only one that does not represent some kind of real or imaginary creature. The Sun was in Libra during the (northern) autumnal equinox in Roman times, again adding to the idea of balance between day and night. However, precession has now shifted the point where the Sun moves south of the ecliptic into Virgo
Rain d'étoiles filantes-Perseides - Perseid meteor shower - Composite of different images. The constellation Cassiopee is traced. Composite of different images. Constellation of Cassiopeia is drawn
Whale Constellation - Constellation of Cetus - Also visible, the constellation Belier at the top of the picture. Cetus (the Whale or Sea Monster) is an ancient constellation in the northern sky depicting a whale - like creature basking on the shores of the fabled stream Eridanus, which flows from the celestial equator far into the southern sky. Cetus is extensive but not very distinctive, containing few bright stars. However, some of the stars are exceptionally interesting, particlarly Mira the wonderful, the prototype variable star, whose variability was first noted 400 years ago. The constellation of Aries is visible at the top of the image
Constellations of the Cup and the Raven - Constellations of Crater and Corvus - On the left, the bright star is Spica, in the Virgin. Corvus (the Raven or Crow) is a southern constellation of rather faint stars. It occupies about 184 square degrees, which makes it the 70th largest constellation (out of 88 recognised today). However, it is ancient, and is associated with Crater (the Cup) and Hydrus, the water snake, on whose back Corvus sits. The grouping was recognised by Ptolemy almost 2000 years ago. Crater (Latin for cup) was also recognised by Ptolemy and covering 282 square degrees is larger than Corvus but is no more distinguished
Constellations of the Fly and the Southern Cross - Constellations of Musca and the Southern cross - The Southern Cross and the Alpha and Beta Stars of Centaur. Below, the constellation of the Fly. In contrast to adjacent Crux, Musca (The Fly) is a much less obvious, less distinguished and less useful constellation that first appeared in Johann Bayer's 1603 Uranometria. It is one of a dozen created by the Dutch explorers/navigators Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman on their voyages into the south seas in the late 16th century

Constellations of Serpens and Ophiuchus - Constellations of Serpens and Ophiuchus - The constellation of Ophiuchus separates the constellation of the Serpent into two parts. Serpens, the Serpent, is an ancient constellation, unique in being formed from two separate sections, Serpens Caput (the head of the snake) to the west and Serpens Cauda (the tail) to the east. Between them lies the constellation of Ophiuchus, the serpent holder, who is usually identified with the ancient Greek physician Asclepius, around whose shoulders or staff a snake is draped. The stars in both parts of Serpens are mostly quite faint and a snake - like shape is hard to pick out in either section. Serpens Cauda is probably easier to locate since it occupies the dusty part of the Milky Way adjoining the brighter star clouds of Scutum and Aquila
