Winter hexagon and March - Winter hexagon - The winter hexagon is an asterism formed by the stars Sirius, Procyon, Pollux, Capella, Aldebaran and Rigel. The image also shows the planet Mars (the brightest spot) and the comet Holmes (scattered spot on the right. 19 December 2007. Winter hexagon is composed by bright stars Sirius, Procyon, Pollux, Capella, Aldebaran and Rigel. The image shows also the comet 17P/Holmes. But very prominent inside the Hexagon is Mars. December 19, 2007
Constellation of the Great Dog - Constellation of Canis Major - Sirius, the bright star on this image is the brightest star in the sky. Canis Major (the Greater Dog) is one of two dogs accompanying Orion the hunter across the sky. The other is Canis Minor. The constellation figure is ancient, and was one of 48 constellations mentioned by Ptolemy (83 - 161 AD), no doubt reflecting earlier ideas. The modern stick figure joining the brightest stars (above) certainly has a very doggy appearance. The brightest star in the sky is here, Sirius, the Dog Star, so called because its emanations were thought to affect dogs in the heat of summer, the 'Dog Days' when the star is in the same part of the sky as the Sun. Sirius is bright because it is only 8.6 light years from the Sun and it is in any case it is an intrinsically bright star, 25 times more luminous than the Sun
Constellations of the Great Dog and Orion - Orion and Canis Major - On the left down, the constellation of the Great Dog with the star Sirius, on the right, the constellation Orion. At the top left, the star Procyon of the Little Dog. The stars Betelgeuse, Procyon and Sirius form the asterism of the Winter Triangle. The brightest star is Sirius in Canis Major. Above right, Orion, and above Sirius, on the left, Procyon in Canis Minor. Betelgeuse, Procyon and Sirius composes an asterism named the winter triangle

Star Sirius in the Great Dog - Sirius in Canis Major - Sirius is the main star in the constellation Big Dog. Seen from the Earth, Sirius is the brightest star in the sky after the Sun. Sirius, the Dog Star, is the brightest star in the night sky at mag - 1.44 and it dominates the constellation of Canis Major. Sirius is a binary star with a white dwarf companion named Sirius B, “” The Pup”. It is an eight - magnitude star that is separated from Sirius by only a couple of arc seconds making it difficult to observe in a telescope because of the primary's great brilliance
Star Vega in Lyra - Star Vega in Lyra - Vega (Alpha Lyrae) is the main star of the constellation Lyra, located only 25.4 light years from the Sun. It is the second brightest star in the northern hemisphere after Sirius. Due to the precession of the equinoxes, Vega will take the place of the polar star indicating the north in the year 14,000. Vega (Alpha Lyrae) is the brightest star of Lyra constellation, located at 25.4 light years from the Sun. It is the second most luminous star in northern hemisphere. Because of the precession of the equinoxes, Vega will point north celestial pole in year 14,000
Constellation of the Great Dog - Constellation of Canis Major - Sirius, the bright star on this image is the brightest star in the sky; it belongs to the constellation of the Great Dog. Constellations of the Great Dog, Orion and Taurus - Winter constellations. On the left the constellation of the Great Dog with the star Sirius, in the center the constellation Orion, on the right the constellation of the Taurus with the cluster of the Hyades and the cluster of the Pleiades. Image obtained on November 3, 2005 in New Jersey - USA. The constellations of Canis Major (the Big Dog), Orion (the Hunter), and Taurus (the Bull) stretch across the winter sky just before the start of dawn in the beginning of November. Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, dominates the left side of the frame. Sirius is the alpha star in the constellation of Canis Major and is located only 9 light years away. Orion, the most distinctive of the winter constellations, is in the middle of the frame. The Hyades and Pleiades (the 7 Sisters), two beautiful open clusters in Taurus, are on the right side of the image
Constellations of Gemels and Little Dog - Constellations of Gemini and Canis Minor - Constellation of Gemels with bright stars Castor and Pollux. Below is the small constellation of the Little Dog, with the bright star Procyon. Canis Minor (the Lesser Dog) is sometimes regarded as the smaller of the two dogs of Orion the hunter. It is minor indeed, just 185 degrees square, and 71st in size of the 88 modern constellations. The most obvious and interesting object Canis Minor is its main star, the pale yellow Procyon. Its name is from the Greek, meaning 'before the dog', since it rises before the Sirius, the Dog Star. Gemini (the Twins) is a much more interesting collection of stars, easily visualised as two figures holding hands, their heads represented by the stars Castor and Pollux. The constellation is an ancient zodiacal construction, with a rich mythology vanishing in the mists of time. It is from the direction of Gemini (near Castor) that annual Geminid meteor showers radiate, around December 14

Sirius A and Sirius B in the Big Dog - Sirius A and Sirius B in Canis Major - Sirius A and Sirius B in the Big Dog seen by the Hubble space telescope in February 2004. The brightest source in this image is Sirius A, the brightest star in the sky in visible light, here overexposed to his companion, Sirius B (lower left), a white dwarf star orbiting Sirius A in 50 years. Sirius is located 8.6 years of light from Earth. This Hubble Space Telescope image shows Sirius, the brightest star in our nighttime sky, along with its faint, tiny stellar companion, Sirius B. Astronomers overexposed the image of Sirius (at center) so that the dim Sirius B (tiny dot at lower left) could be seen. The cross - shaped diffraction spikes and concentric rings around Sirius, and the small ring around Sirius B, are artifacts produced within the telescope's imaging system. Sirius B is a white dwarf that orbits around Sirius every 50 years. Sirius, only 8.6 light - years from Earth, is the fifth closest star system known. Exposure Dates: October 2003 February 2004 Exposure Time: 11.2 min 15.8 mi
Sirius A and Sirius B in the Big Dog - Sirius A and Sirius B seen in X - ray - Sirius A and Sirius B in the Big Dog seen in X-ray by the Chandra telescope. The brightest source on this image is Sirius B, a white dwarf star whose surface, heated at a temperature of 25,000 degres, emits huge X-rays. The other point is Sirius A, the brightest star in the sky in visible light, but practically non-existent in this wavelength. An X - ray image of the Sirius star system located 8.6 light years from Earth. This image shows two sources and a spike - like pattern due to the support structure for the transmission grating. The bright source is Sirius B, a white dwarf star that has a surface temperature of about 25,000 degrees Celsius which produces very low energy X - rays. The dim source at the position of Sirius A, a normal star more than twice as massive as the Sun, may be due to ultraviolet radiation from Sirius A leaking through the filter on the detector. In contrast, Sirius A is the brightest star in the northern sky when viewed with an optical telescope, while Sirius B is 10,000 times dimmer. Because the two stars are so close together Sirius B escaped detection until 1862 when Alvan Clark discovered it while testing one of the best optical telescopes in the world at that time. The white dwarf, Sirius B, has a mass equal to the mass of the Sun, packed into a diameter that is 90% that of the Earth. The gravity on the surface of Sirius B is 400,000 times that of Earth

Constellations of Burin and Dove - Constellations of Caelum and Columba - Constellations of Burin (right) and Dove (left) in the southern hemisphere. The bright star at the bottom of the picture is Canopus. Caelum (originally Caelum Sculptoris, the sculptor's chisel) is a small, rather obscure constallation hewn from rather thin pickings between Eridanus and Columba by Abbe de Lacaille in the 1750s. It is only 125 degrees square, making it 81st in area out of 88 constellations. Rather more interesting to the eye is Columba (originally Columba Noachi, Noah's dove) easily found between Sirius and Canopus. It is twice the area of Caelum and contans a few brighter stars. Best seen in the early evening in January
Comparison of Sun Sizes, Sirius and Rigel - Size comparison: Sun, Sirius and Rigel - The Sun (yellow star at the top), and the star Sirius A, (the brightest star in the sky) compared to the huge star Rigel, a supergeant blue star in the constellation of Orion. The brightest star in Earth's sky, Sirius, is seen here next to our Sun and the blue giant Rigel. Sirius has a small companion star, Sirius B. Rigel forms the left foot in the constellation Orion, and its light is equal to 40,000 suns

Constellation Lievre - Constellation of Lepus - The constellation Lievre is located below the constellation Orion. On the left, the bright star Sirius. Despite the faintness of its stars, Lepus (the Hare) was known in ancient Greece, as was Orion the hunter, at whose feet it resides, inconspicuously. The hare (or rabbit) is a creature traditionally associated with the Moon, since, with imagination, the man in the Moon features can also be seen as a rabbit. This connection with Orion makes mythological sense, since the Moon was perpetually chased across the sky by the Sun and Orion is a Sun god. Lepus is a middling - sized constellation, ranking 51 in size in the modern 88. Its brightest star is Alpha Leporis (Arneb), from the Arabic al-arnab meaning 'the hare'. Also visible in the image is R Leporis, Hind's Crimson star, whose brightness varies over 5 magnitudes (100 times) over a period of 423 days. It is a carbon star and at its maximum is a fine sight in a small telescope or good binoculars

Comparison of Sirius B, Sun and Earth Sizes - Size comparison: Sirius B, Earth and Sun - Sirius B star is a white dwarf star located 8.6 years - light of the Earth. A little larger than the Earth (but of a mass close to that of our Sun), it appears on this illustration at the scale next to the Earth and before the Sun. Sirius B, a white dwarf star just 8.6 light - years from Earth, is a little larger than our world, and far smaller than our Sun. It orbits the brightest star in Earth's sky, Sirius A, at a distance equivalent to the distance from our Sun to Uranus. While Sirius B is about the size of Earth, it has almost as much mass as our Sun

Constellation Orion - Constellation of Orio
Constellations of Dove and Lievre - Constellations of Columba and Lepus - Constellations of Dove (near the horizon) and Lievre (above). The bright star on the left is Sirius. Columba (originally Columba Noachi, Noah's dove) is seen here low on the horizon and easily found between Sirius and Canopus - - if you live in the southern hemisphere. It is one of the smaller and less obvious constellations, with an area of 270 square degrees. Lepus (the Hare) is about the same size as Columba and rather more obvious to the eye, lying to the south of Orion. It is one of Ptolemy's 48 constellations preserved to this day
Constellations of the Compsole and the Great Dog - Constellations of Pyxis and Canis Major - Constellation of the Compsole, near the horizon, and constellation of the Great Dog with the brilliant star Sirius. Pyxis, the Mariner's Compasse was originally Pyxis Nauticus and refers to the magnetic compasset. It is a small, insignificant arrangement of faint stars surrounded by much more eyecatching patterns of stars. Pyxis was once part of the very large constellation Argo Navis, the ship Argo, which carried Jason and the Argonauts. Argo Navis is now obsolete, but it was listed in Ptolemy's star catalogue, the Almagest. When the constellation boundaries were defined by the International Astronomical Union in the 1930s it was the only one of Ptolemy's 48 constellations that was not accepted. Instead, it was divided into the four constellations introduced by the French cleric and astronomer Nicolas de Lacaille in the 1750s: Carina, the keel, Puppis the stern, Vela the sails, and Pyxis. La Caille originally called this part of Argo Navis Malus, the Mast, which is rather more appropriate since the ancient Greeks did not use the magnetic compasse, and such compasse are not usually used on a ship's mast. However, alpha Pixidis, is sometimed known by its Arabic name Al Sumut, meaning “” the way””. This word is the origin of azimuth, a directional coordinate on the horizon

Le Grand Chien sur le chateau de Lagarde (09) - Starry sky above the castle of Lagarde - Sky star above the ruins of the castle of Lagarde, Ariege. Starry sky above the castle of Lagarde in Ariege
Constellations of the Unicorn and the Little Dog - Constellations of Monoceros and Canis Minor - Constellation of the Unicorn, at its right Orion, at the top left the Little Dog with the star Procyon, at the bottom of Sirius. The stars Sirius, Procyon and Betelgeuse form the asterism of the winter triangle. Monoceros constellation, at right: Orion, top left Canis Minor with Procyon, bottom Sirius in Canis Major. Monoceros (the Unicorn) represents mythical creature set among the stars. This one has the forelegs and (horned) head of a horse, the hindquarters of a stag and the tail of a lion. Such creatures are sometimes seen in Assyrian (~ 2500 - 600 BCE) carvings, and have been interpreted as originating in traveller's tales of the Indian or African rhinoceros. The modern constellation sits astride both the Milky Way and the celestial equator. It is also enclosed on three sides by the bright stars of the Winter Triangle (Sirius, Procyon and Betelgeuse). Of course this refers to the northern hemisphere winter; these stars are equally visible in the southern summer and make Monoceros easy to find. However, the stars within the constellation itself are rather faint, though they can be joined tp produce a figure resembling a unicorn. The famous Rosette nebula is just visible in the only closed triangle of the constellation figure. Its name is from the Greek, meaning 'before the dog', since it rises before the Sirius, the Dog Star
