The extinction of the Cretace - The extinction of the Cretace - Artist's view of the disappearance of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago
Futalongkosaurus - Futalongkosaurus dukei, is a titanosaur whose first representative was described in 2007. His fossils were found in Argentina. This herbivorous dinosaur was 32 to 34 metres long, weighed nearly 8 tonnes, and lived about 87 million years ago. The recently described titanosaurid, Futalognkosaurus dukei, has the most complete skeleton known (all cervical and dorsal vertebrae and hip bones) for a sauropod of its enormous size (estimated at around 34 m), and was recovered from Argentinian Coniacian Cretaceous deposits that also yielded a wealth of other contemporaneous plant and animal fossils
Psittacosaurus and pond - The psittacosaur (Psittacosaurus) is a ceratopsian dinosaur from the early Cretace that lived in Asia about 130 to 100 million years ago. A Jurassic Psittacosaurus prepares to dine on a scrubland cycad 130 million years ago in what is today central Asia. Psittacosaurus was one of the earliest known ceratopsians, a family of horned, frilled dinosaurs that includes the better known Triceratops. Psittacosaurus was about 3 to 6 feet long and weighed 50 to 175 pounds, depending on species. At least one species had long, quill-like structures on its tail and lower back. With a parrot-like beak it is believed that Psittacosaurus was a plant-eater
Ichthyosaurus - Ichthyosaurus (fish body lezard) is a marine reptile living from the early Jurassic in Lower Cretace. Ichthyosaurus is an extinct genus of ichthyosaur from the Early Jurassic
Microraptor - Microraptor was a genus of small dromaeosaurid living in the lower cretace between 130 and 120 million years. A feathered Microraptor alights atop a tree fern 120 million years ago in what is today Liaoning, China. Like the older Archaeopteryx, Microraptor was about size of a modern European Magpie and is one of smallest dinosaurs ever discovered. Microraptor's entire body was covered with feathers including a broad stabilizing tail and elongated feathers for flying on both its arms and legs, leading to its classification as a four-winged dromaeosaur
Spinosaur - Spinosaurus - Spinosaur is a theropod dinosaur that lived in what is now Egypt during the cretacious period 95 to 93 million years ago. It was probably the largest carnivorous dinosaurs. An eight ton Spinosaurus searches for its next meal 95 million years ago in shallow waters of what is today Egypt. With a massive crocodile-like head and enormous muscular body, this terrifying carnivore was larger than the Early Cretaceous Suchomimus and may have been mightier even than the famous Tyrannosaurus Rex of approximately the same period
Acrocanthosaurus and Sauroposeidons - Acrocanthosaurus and Sauroposeidons - View of an Acrocanthosaurus (Acrocanthosaurus atokensis) with a group of Sauroposeidons (Sauroposeidon proteles) in the distance. On the left, a coniferous drill (Frenelopsis ramosissima). The huge carnivorous dinosaur Acrocanthosaurus atokensis emerges from a stand of conifers (Frenelopsis ramosissima) onto a wide flood plain near the eastern coast of the Western Interior Seaway (an extension of the Atlantic that ran through the middle of North America in the Cretaceous period) to stalk a trio of Oklahoma's gigantic sauropods (Sauropods) On proteles). Acrocanthosaurus atokensis was recently declared the state dinosaur of Oklahoma
Western Inner Seaway - Artist's View - The Western Interior Seaway - The Western Interior Seaway (or North American Inner Sea) seen about 75 million years ago. This sea divided the North American continent into two continents, Laramidia in the west and Appalachia in the east. This is how the Western Interior Seaway may have appeared 75 million years ago from Earth orbit. This large inland sea once divided the North American continent into two landmasses, Laramidia to the west and Appalachia to the east. Branching toward the northeast is the Hudson Seaway and to the north on the horizon are the liquid polar waters of the Labrador Seaway. At less than one - fifth the size of present day North America, the island continent of Laramidia extended from present - day Mexico to Alaska and was home to tyrannosaurs, dromaeosaurids, troodontids, hadrosaurs, ceratopsians, pachycephalosaurs, and titanosaur sauropods. The dinosaurs of Appalachia are less - understood as much of the fossil evidence was destroyed by the glaciers that alternately descended from the north and retreated starting 2.5 million years ago
Euoplocephalus - Euoplocephalus tutus was a herbivorous dinosaur who lived in Cretace between 85 and 65 million years BC. 7 m long and a weight of 2 tonnes, it was characteristic of the ankylosaurid family. Euoplocephalus tutus was an ankylosaurid -lenght 6m, weight around 2 tons, first ankylosaurid discovered with armored shutters that it could slide down to cover its eyelids -lived between 85 and 65 million years ago, in the Campanian- Maastrichtian age of the late Cretaceous -long tail and heavy club would have made a serious herensive weapon -was an bivore - brain was relatively small and intelligence was low among the dinosaurs -Over 40 fossils have been found in Alberta, Canada and Montana, USA
Brachiosaurus - View of a Brachiosaur (Brachiosaurus Branchai) one of the largest known dinosaurs. Brachiosaurus (Brahiosaurus Branchai) was one of the tallest dinosaurs
The disappearance of dinosaurs - Artist view - Tylosaur and KT Event - Artist view - Impact of the asteroid responsible for the disappearance of dinosaurs about 65 million years ago. In the foreground, a tylosaurus, a large carnivorous marine lezard. The very end of the Mesozoic is marked by evidence of a devastating asteroid impact 65 million years ago, which is termed the KT event, referring to the Cretaceous (K) -Tertiary (T) transition. This impact likely contributed to the demise of the dinosaurs, although recent findings call into question how decisive the blow actually was. In this image, a huge tylosaur, a relative of today's varanid lizards such as the Komodo dragon, faces its last few minutes of existence in a Texas lagoon. Over the horizon looms the rising ejecta from the KT impact, which occurred in what is today the Yucatan
Sarcosuchus and Ornithopodes - Sarcosuchus & Ornithopoda dinosaurs - Sarcosuchus or Sarcosuchus imperator was a reptile of the order of crocodilians that was between 11 and 14 metres long and weighed nearly 10 tonnes. He lived about 112 million years ago in the cretace. It was one of the biggest crocodiles that existed on Earth. A pair of four-foot-long ornithischian dinosaurs of the order Ornithopoda give wide berth to a 40-foot-long, 10-ton crocodyliform of the genus Sarcosuchus 110 million years ago in what is today Africa. A distant relative of the crocodile, Sarcosuchus was one of the largest crocodile-like reptiles that ever lived, almost twice as long as today's saltwater crocodile
Brachylophosaurus - A group of Brachylophosaurus canadensis is attacked by a Daspletosaurus torosus. In the sky, a couple of pterosaurs (azhdarchidae) observe the scene. Montana, USA, 77 million years ago. In a 77-million-year-old wetland in Montana, the individual of Brachylophosaurus canadensis called “” Leonardo”” (far right) bellows a call, warning his herd of an ambush by a Daspletosaurus torosus (background, left). A pair of azhdarchid pterosaurs survey the scene aerially while a Basilemys tutle observes from the water in the foreground
Cretaceous marine predators - Cretaceous marine predators - Artist's view of three marine predators evoluting in the Sea of Niobrara, the inner sea of North America, 75 million years ago. From left to right there is an invertebra pursued by a 1.2 metre Enchodus, followed by a 5 metre Dolichorhynchops followed by an 18 metre Mosasaurus. Three primary marine predators that shared the ocean waters of the Western Interior Seaway of North America 75 million years ago are illustrated here. Left to right is a non-descript invertebrate pursued by a 4 foot long Enchodus, followed by a 17 foot long Dolichorhynchops, followed by a 55 foot long Mosasaur
Late Cretaceous Fauna - Late Cretaceous Fauna - Late Cretaceous Fauna. Two Brachylophosaurus canadensis, on the left, graze among magnolias, while in the distance pass a couple of Albertaceratops nesmoi. Lower left is a turtle (Aspideretoides). Montana during the late Cretaceous. A pair of Brachylophosaurus canadensis forage among Magnolia bushes while a couple of Albertaceratops nesmoi soak up the morning rays in the distance. An Aspideretoides turtle hides in the reeds in the foreground
Isisaurus Colberti - A couple of Isisaurus Colberti move in a plain of what is now Central India. These herbivorous dinosaurs lived 70 million years ago, were 20 metres long and weighed 15 tons. Isisaurus Colberti was previously named Titanosaurus colberti. A pair of massive Isisaurus colberti wander lush plains 70 million years ago in what is today central India. Formerly known as Titanosaurus colberti, Isisaurus colberti was a leaf-eating herbivore that grew up to 60 feet long and weighed as much as 15 tons
Colorful Torosaurus - Torosaurus lived 75 million years ago in southeastern Wyoming, USA. The usefulness of his collar is not clearly defined. A protective shield against predators is a possibility, but relatively fragile, it is likely that it was used as an attribute of visual intimidation to rivals or to attract opposing sex. Although no pigment of colour has been preserved in the fossil remains, it is not unreasonable to imagine that these collars may have been very coloured. A colorful Torosaurus wonders a Cretaceous forest 75 million years ago in what is today southeastern Wyoming. Like the better known Triceratops, Torosaurus was a ceratopsid, a family of large four-legged plant-eating dinosaurs characterized by beaks, rows of shearing teeth in the back of the jaw, and elaborate horns and frills. While they resemble defensive shields, the frills are in fact relatively fragile, suggesting that they may have served a purpose other than protecting against a brute force attack. One possibility is that the frills were employed as visual displays in order to intimidate rivals and attract the opposite sex. While no color pigmentation has been preserved in the fossil remains of ceratopsids, it's not unreasonable to suggest that they may have been very colorful, like many reptiles and birds today
Diabloceratops - Diabloceratops was a Ceratopsian dinosaur from the Upper Cretace who lived in North America 70 million years ago. A one ton, 20 football long Diabloceratops wonders a Cretaceous forest 70 million years ago in what is today Utah. Like the better known Triceratops, Diabloceratops was a Ceratopsid, a large four-legged plant-eating dinosaur characterized by beaks, rows of shearing teeth in the back of the jaw, and elaborate horns and frills. While they resemble defensive shields, the frills are in fact relatively fragile, suggesting that they may have served a purpose other than protecting against a brute force attack. One possibility is that the frills were employed as visual displays in order to intimidate rivals and attract the opposite sex
Clidastes - Clidastes liodontus is a small mosasauridae of a few meters living in the cretace. Clidastes liodontus is an extinct genus of mosasaur lizard of the Late Cretaceous
Brachiosaurus - View of Brachiosaurs (Brahiosaurus Branchai) one of the largest known dinosaurs. Brachiosaurus (Brahiosaurus Branchai) was one of the tallest dinosaurs
Sarcosuchus & crocodiles compared - The Sarcosuchus or Sarcosuchus imperator was a reptile of the order of crocodilians that was between 11 and 14 metres long and weighed nearly 10 tonnes. He lived about 110 million years ago in the cretace. It was one of the biggest crocodiles that existed on Earth. It is here compared to a Crocodylus porosus, on the left, and a Gavialis gangeticus, on the right. An adult crocodyliform reptile of the genus Sarcosuchus from 110 million years ago is compared to a modern saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) on the left and a modern gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) on the right. The Sarcosuchus is about 40 feet long and weighs 10 tons* while the saltwater crocodile is 20 feet long and weighs 2 tons and the gharial is 20 feet long and weighs about 350 pounds The saltwater crocodile is currently the largest of all living reptiles, as well as the largest terrestrial and riparian predator in the world, while the gharial, aka fish-eating crocodile, is the long-living and most aquatic of all modern crocodiles. Both modern crocodiles have been extant in their current forms for about 50 million years, though sadly the gharial is critically endangered with less than 300 known living individuals today.
Caudipteryx amidst Williamsonia - Caudipteryx is a genus of theropod dinosaur in the oviraptorosaur family. Maybe Caudipteryx was omnivorous. He lived 100 to 130 million years ago. It was two metres long, 60 centimetres high and a weight of 15 kilograms. It is considered an oviraptoride because of its edent beak and feathers. Peacock-sized theropod dinosaurs of the genus Caudipteryx wander a landscape dominated by cycad-like seed plants of the genus Williamsonia 125 million years ago in what is today China. Caudipteryx was a maniraptoran with a combination of reptile and bird-like features, including soft downy feathers that covered its body and a broad feathered tail. It could not fly, but was probably a swift runner
Colorful Albertaceratops - Albertaceratops lived 77 million years ago in Alberta, Canada; it was 2 metres tall at the withers and weighed more than 2 tonnes. Hesperonychus - View of a group of Hesperonychus on a lake in Alberta 75 million years ago. In the background, a Gorgosaurus libratus approaches. Hesperonychus elizabethae is a small dinosaur from the late Cretace who lived in the United States. It belongs to the family Dromaeosauridae. A group of North America's smallest known carnivorous, non-avian dinosaur, estimated to weigh 1.9 kg, the recently described Hesperonychus elizabethae prowls the shores of a shallow Albertan lake in the Campanian Late Cretaceous (75 million years ago) while a much larger theropod, Gorgosaurus libratus, approaches from the opposite shore. Hesperonychus elizabethae was a genus of small, carnivorous dromaeosaurid dinosaur
Marine predators of the cretace - Cretaceous marine predators - Artist's view showing three marine predators that evoluted in the inland sea of North America 75 million years ago. From left to right there is an invertebra pursued by a 1.2 metre Enchodus, followed by a 5 metre Dolichorhynchops followed by an 18 metre Mosasaurus. Colorful Triceratops - A ten ton Triceratops wonders a Cretaceous forest 68 million years ago in what is today the Western United States
Colorful Pentaceratops - The Pentaceratops lived 75 million years ago in the southwestern United States. Herbivore, it was 8 meters long and weighed 6 tons. Diabloceratops and White Rhinoceros - Comparison - Diabloceratops & White Rhinoceros compared - An adult Diabloceratops who lived 70 million years ago is compared to today's adult White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum). The Diabloceratops was 2.5 metres high at the withers and weighed 3.6 tonnes, while the white rhinoceros was 1.8 metres high at the withers and weighed 3.2 tonnes. An adult Diabloceratops from 70 million years ago is compared to a modern adult White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum). The Diabloceratops is a little over 8 feet tall at the shoulder and weighs 8,000 pounds*, while the White Rhinoceros is 6 feet tall at the shoulder and weighs 7,000 pounds.* Values are estimates only based upon available paleontological data
Suchomimus - Suchomimus (crocodile mime) was a large carnivorous dinosaur with a jaw similar to that of a crocodile, living in the middle of the cretace 110 to 120 million years ago. 12 feet tall and weighing five tons, a carnivorous Suchomimus wanders a beach on the ancient Tethys Ocean 115 million ago in search of her next meal. A ferocious predator nearly as big as T-Rex with a crocodile-like head, Suchomimus (“crocodile mimic”) may have lived largely on fish and carrion in what today is Northern Africa
Ouranosaurs and Sarcosuchus - Ouranosaurus stalked by Sarcosuchus - Three Ouranosaurus water a pond while a sarcosuchus approaches, threatening. Ouranosaurus nigeriensis is a herbivorous dinosaur of the order of ornithisdogs who lived in Africa 110 million years ago in Cretace. Sarcosuchus is a distant parent from crocodiles, measuring about ten metres in length. Three Ouranosaurus drink at a watering hole while a menacing Sarcosuchus floats nearby 110 million years ago in what is today Africa. The environment is moderately arid with Prickly Juniper and other hardy conifers dominating the ruddy landscape. Ouranosaurus was a variety of Iguanodont, a group of large plant-eating dinosaurs that also includes the well-known “” duck-billed””” hadrosaurs. At about 24 feet long and 4 tons, Ouranosaurus was unusual in that its skeleton suggests it had a large hump on its back. The hump may have served as a reservoir for water and/or source of nutrition for lean times as they do for modern bison and camels. Sarcosuchus, a distant relative of the crocodile, was one of the largest giant crocodile-like reptiles that ever lived. 30-40 feet long and weighing 8 to 10 tons, Sarcosuchus was almost twice as long as the modern saltwater crocodile. It would have been a formidable threat even to a beast as large as the Ouranosaurus
Trinacromerum - Trinacromerum is a plesiosaur, a marine reptile of the cretace measuring 3 metres long. Below swim a champsosaurus and an ammonite. A Late Cretaceous marine reptile, Trinacromerum, cruises prehistoric Manitoba's oceans, while a Champsosaurus and an ammonoid swim by below. Manitoba is generally devoid of dinosaur fossils, for the province was inundated by the Western Interior Seaway for the vast majority of the Mesozoic that is preserved in its sedimentary strata. Trinacromerum is an extinct genus of sauropterygian reptile belonging to the plesiosaur suborder. It lived during the Late Cretaceous period. It was 3 meters (10 feet) long. Its teeth show it fed on small fish

From left to right: Gorgosaurus libratus, Edmontonia longiceps, Brachylophosaurus canadensis, Stegoceras validum, Styracosaurus albertensis and Chasmosaurus belli. This landscape depicts a metasequoia-dominated forest in Montana during the Campanian of the late Cretaceous. Gathering in a clearing are (left to right) Gorgosaurus libratus, Edmontonia longiceps, Brachylophosaurus canadensis, Stegoceras validum, Styracosaurus albertensis and Chasmosaurus belli
Earth 90 million years ago - Artist's view - Late Cretaceous Earth - Earth seen in the upper cretace, about 90 million years ago. This is how the western hemisphere of the Earth may have appeared 90 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period. During this period continental drift, driven by the massive forces of plate tectonics, had broken the supercontinent of Pangea into Laurasia in the north and Gondwana in the south. With a climate much warmer than today's there were no frozen polar caps and the resulting high ocean levels submerged a third of today's landmasses under warm shallow seas creating numerous waterways and “” island””” continents. In this image much of the incipient North American continent is divided by the Western Interior Seaway, the Isthmus of Panama is submerged by the Proto - Caribbean Sea, and the Pacific Ocean is making an incursion into South America
Masiakasaurus - Masiakasaurus (meaning Vicious Lizard “”) is a genus of small theropod dinosaur Abelisauride from Madagascar, measuring about 2 metres and a weight of 30 kg, living at the end of Cretace (75 to 65 million years). Small predatory theropod dinosaurs of the genus Masiakasaurus explores a forest of cypress, ferns and horsetails 70 million years ago in what is today Madagascar.Masiakasaurus was a small-bodied carnivore that grew to about six feet long and weighed up to 200 pounds. Its front teeth were projected forward, giving it a buck toothed appearance, an adaptation that is believed to have aided it in catching fish and other small prey.
Hesperonychus elizabethae was a genus of small, carnivorous dromaeosaurid dinosaur
Suchomimus - Suchomimus tenerensis fishing - A Suchomimus catches a shark on the edge of the ancient Tethys Ocean in today's North Africa. Suchomimus tenerensis (crocodile mime) was a large carnivorous dinosaur with a jaw similar to that of a crocodile, which lived in the middle of the cretace 110 to 120 million years ago. A five ton, Early Cretaceous Suchomimus snags a shark from a lush estuary near the ancient Tethys Ocean in what today is Northern Africa. Suchomimus was well-armed with long claws and a long, crocodile-like snout with dozens of teeth. Given these distinctly crocodilian features, it's believed that this dinosaur, like modern day crocodiles, dined largely on fish
Cretoxyrhina and Clidastes - Cretoxyrhina and Clidastes - A Cretoxyrhina pursues a Clidastes liodontus, a small mosasauridae of a few meters. Cretoxyrhina mantelli, was a shark that lived in the Cretace period in the western inland sea about 100 million years ago. Cretoxyrhina mantelli pursuing Clidastes liodontus. Cretoxyrhina mantelli was a large shark that lived during the Cretaceous period, about 100 to 82 million years ago. Clidastes is an extinct genus of mosasaur lizard of the Late Cretaceous

Elasmosaurus - Artist's view of two Elasmosaurus, of the great marine reptiles of the cretace, swimming under the gaze of Ichthyornis. A pair of 40-foot-long Elasmosaurus engage in a swimming courtship dance in a secluded pool 80 million years ago in what is today North America. The gull-like birds are Ichthyornis, the Cretaceous ecological equivalent of modern seabirds such as gulls, petrels, and skimmers. At over two tons, Elasmosaurus was an air-breathing carnivorous reptile with flippers for limbs and a relatively small head with sharp teeth. More than half of its length was neck which had more than 70 vertebrae, more than any other animal
