Earth at the end of Permian - Ring arcs over the Permian Earth - A ring of rocks and dust is orbiting the Earth. The massive continent below is Pangee and the ocean to the west is Panthalassa. This is what Earth was supposed to look like at the end of Permian, about 260 million years ago, before the first dinosaurs appeared. This ring around the Earth was of earthly origin, constitutes debris thrown into orbit by collision with a meteorite or comet. Over time, these debris have either fallen or fallen back to Earth in a meteorite rain. A dusty ring arc orbits four thousand miles above Earth's equator. The massive continent below is Pangea and the ocean to the west is Panthalassa. This is how the Earth may have appeared during the end of the Permian period, a time just prior to the appearance of the dinosaurs, when continental drift was pulling Pangea apart into the seven continents we know today. 260 million years ago the Earth may have been host to ring arcs similar to the incomplete rings that currently circumscribe the planet Neptune. Unlike Neptune's rings, the ring arcs around the Earth were of terrestrial origin, debris thrown into orbit by a collision with a large meteorite or comet. The debris consisted of tiny pebbles that were once molten droplets of ejecta, long since cooled in the vacuum of space. The orbit of the ring arc would eventually decay, returning the debris back to Earth as a shower of meteorites. This debris is found on Earth's surface today in the form of dark, glassy objects known as tektites

Asteroide Ida seen by Galileo probe - Asteroid Ida seen by Galileo spacecraft - Mosaic of five images obtained by the Galileo probe on 28 August 1993 between 3000 and 3800 km from the asteroid. This view of the asteroid 243 Ida is a mosaic of five image frames acquired by the Galileo spacecraft's solid-state imaging system at ranges of 3,057 to 3,821 kilometers (1,900 to 2,375 miles) on August 28, 1993. Ida is the second asteroid ever encountered by a spacecraft. It appears to be about 52 kilometers (32 miles) in length, more than twice as large as Gaspra, the first asteroid observed by Galileo in October 1991

Artist's view of the asteroid 2060 Chiron: (2060) Chiron, also designed as 95P/Chiron, is a centaur type cometary asteroid, an ice body of 166 kilometres of diameter orbiting around the Sun between Saturn and Uranus. 2060 Chiron, also known as 95P/Chiron, is a minor planet in the outer Solar System, orbiting the Sun between Saturn and Uranus. Discovered in 1977 it was the first-identified member of a new class of objects now known as centaurs - bodies orbiting between the asteroid belt and the Kuiper belt. Besides the four giant planets, Chiron and 10199 Chariklo, also a centaur, are the only other bodies in the Solar System known to have rings. Although it was initially called an asteroid and classified only as a minor planet with the designation “” 2060 Chiron””, it was later found to exhibit behavior typical of a comet. Today it is classified as both a minor planet and a comet, and is accordingly also known by the cometary designation “” 95P/Chiron””
Asteroide Vesta and other asteroides - Asteroid Vesta compared to other asteroids - Comparison of the sizes of the nine asteroides visits to date by space probes. The asteroid Vesta, with a diameter of 530 km, is the largest. This composite image shows the comparative sizes of nine asteroids. Up until now, Lutetia, with a diameter of 81 miles (130 kilometers), was the largest asteroid visited by a spacecraft, which occurred during a flyby. Vesta, which is also considered a protoplanet because it's a large body that almost became a planet, dwarfs all other small bodies in this image, with its diameter sizing up at approximately 330 miles (530 kilometers)

The disappearance of dinosaurs - Artist view - Tylosaur and KT Event - Artist view - Impact of the asteroid responsible for the disappearance of dinosaurs about 65 million years ago. In the foreground, a tylosaurus, a large carnivorous marine lezard. The very end of the Mesozoic is marked by evidence of a devastating asteroid impact 65 million years ago, which is termed the KT event, referring to the Cretaceous (K) -Tertiary (T) transition. This impact likely contributed to the demise of the dinosaurs, although recent findings call into question how decisive the blow actually was. In this image, a huge tylosaur, a relative of today's varanid lizards such as the Komodo dragon, faces its last few minutes of existence in a Texas lagoon. Over the horizon looms the rising ejecta from the KT impact, which occurred in what is today the Yucatan
Tunguska Event - Artist View - Tunguska Event - Artist view - On June 30, 1908, a car, several ten meters in diameter, exploded over the Tunguska region of Siberia. 2000 km of forest and taiga were destroyed, blown by the shock wave of the car. The explosion was heard up to 1500 km. Just after seven in the morning of June 30, 1908 a huge fireball appeared over the region, and detonated as it hit the upper atmosphere. The explosion broke windows over 500 miles away. There were some herdsmen and hunters in the area at the time who were able to provide eyewitness accounts of what became known as the Tunguska Event. Many would later die from what appears to have been radiation exposure
Artist's view of the asteroid 10199 Chariklo - Artist impression of asteroid 10199 Chariklo: (10199) Chariklo, is a centaur, an asteroid whose orbit crosses that of the outer planets of the solar system. Discovered on 15 February 1997 by the Spacewatch program, it is the first known asteroid with rings. 10199 Chariklo is the largest confirmed centaur (minor planet of the outer Solar System). It orbits the Sun between Saturn and Uranus, grazing the orbit of Uranus. On 26 March 2014, astronomers announced the discovery of two rings (nicknamed Oiapoque and Chui), around Chariklo by observing a stellar occultation making it the first known minor planet to have rings

The key components include: -Observatories and astronomers with telescopes of various sizes, both professional and amateur -A central SSA-NEO data centre, the 'Small Bodies Data Centre', which uses astrometric measurements collected by the Minor Planet Center (USA) -An analysis capability to predict possible impact locations and assess dangers -Analyses related to risk mitigation, including the possible deflection of an asteroid -A system for issuing warnings and alerts to civil authorities in Europe Data on NeOS are collected from telescopes and radar systems worldwide. Each of these submit observations to the Minor Planet Center (MPC), operated by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) at Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, which acts as a central clearing house for asteroid and comet observations. The measurements collected there are retrieved by the European Small Bodies Data Centre; orbits and miss distances are computed. In case of high-risk impact predictions, the data will be cross-checked with NASA's SENTRY system, operated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California, before issuing alerts

Artist's view of the asteroid Lutetia - Artist impression of the asteroid Lutetia - Artist's view of the asteroid Lutetia passing by a rocky planet 4 billion years ago. This artist's impression shows an event in the early history of the Solar System that may explain how the unusual asteroid Lutetia came to now be located in the main asteroid belt, between Mars and Jupiter. Lutetia is seen passing close to one of the very young rocky planets about four billion years ago and having its orbit drastically altered. Its unusual spectral properties indicate that Lutetia started life as a fragment of the material that was forming the inner planets but it is now found to be an interloper much further from the Sun

Asteroid collapsed by tidal force - Artist view - Artist view - Artist view - Artist view - Artist view of an asteroid breaks by the gravitational attraction of a star at the end of life, a white dwarf. This artist's concept illustrates a dead star, or “” white dwarf,””” surrounded by the bits and pieces of a disintegrating asteroid. Asteroids are leftover scraps of planetary material. They form early on in a star's history when planets are forming out of collisions between rocky bodies. When a star like our sun dies, shrinking down to a skeleton of its former self called a white dwarf, its asteroids get jostled about. If one of these asteroids gets too close to the white dwarf, the white dwarf's gravity will chew the asteroid up, leaving a cloud of dust

Asteroide Eros seen by the probe NEAR - Asteroid Eros seen by NEAR spacecraft - Mosaic of images obtained by the probe Near on 26 October 2000 showing at a distance of 6.4 km from the asteroid. The smallest rocks seen in this photo measure 1.4m. 433 Eros is an asteroid of the family of Amors and is about 30 km long. This image mosaic was taken in the early hours of October 26, 2000, as NEAR Shoemaker made its low-altitude flyover of Eros. At the time of closest approach, the camera was looking at a region just 6.4 kilometers (4 miles) away. Much of the surface is covered in rocks of all sizes and shapes, set on a gently rounded surface. Other regions are smooth, suggesting accumulation of fine regolith. The smallest rocks seen are about 1.4 meters (5 feet) across

Illustration of a triple system of asteroids - Triple system of asteroids -Artwork - Artist's view of two small asteroids (Romulus and Remus) orbiting asteroid 87 Sylvia. Sylvia is about 380 km long and is one of the largest members of the asteroid belt. Two small asteroids are orbiting a larger one known since 1866 as 87 Sylvia. Sylvia is measuring 380 x 260 x 230 km; its moons are considerably smaller, orbiting in nearly circular orbits and in the same plane and direction. The closest and newly discovered moonlet, orbiting about 710 km from Sylvia, is Remus, a body only 7 km across and circling Sylvia every 33 hours. The second, Romulus, orbits at about 1360 km in 87.6 hours and measures about 18 km across. The asteroid 87 Sylvia is one of the largest known from the asteroid main belt, and is located about 3.5 times further away from the Sun than the Earth, between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter
Mine sur un asteroide - Illustration - Mining base on double asteroid 90 Antiope - Illustration - Artist view une base minere installee sur l'asteroid double 90 Antiope. Some day a it may be worthwhile to mine resources from a distant asteroid, whether for raw materials for building an orbiting structure (cheaper than rocketing the materials from Earth's surface) or for some exotic material found only on a particular asteroid. This image is a bird's eye view of a mining settlement on the double asteroid 90 Antiope, located in the main asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. These two asteroids are about the same size - - 70 miles across - - and orbit around a common center like two ends of a barbell. The gap separating the two bodies is only about 40 miles. The extremely low surface gravity would permit the construction of delicate structures, such as the solar power array silhouetted against the sunny side of the sister asteroid, and would make it relatively easy to transport mined material off the surface

Impact on the Moon - Moon Little splat: 10 million years after the Moon's surface has cooled, an impact with another small body formed from the ring surrounding the Earth probably occurred. This could explain the two very different faces of today's Moon - 10 million years after Moon's cooling: Today's moon was not the only one formed from the ring. There were several others, orbiting at the Lagrange points. The orbit of one was not stable and it eventually drifted into the larger moon in a slow-motion impact that caused the smaller satellite to pancake, spreading itself over an entire hemisphere, creating the mismatched sides the moon has today. An unlucky witness to the “” little splat”” would have seen a tsunami of molten rock roaring up over the horizon

Exoplanete in formation - NGC 2547-ID8: Illustration of the collision between two asteroids in the habitable zone of the star NGC 2547-ID8. This could result in an accretion-forming rocky exoplanet. Planets, including those like our own Earth, form from epic collisions between asteroids and even bigger bodies, called proto-planets. Sometimes the colliding bodies are ground to dust, and sometimes they stick together to ultimately form larger, mature planets. This artist's conception shows one such smash-up. Spitzer's infrared vision detected a huge eruption around the star NGC 2547-ID8 between August 2012 and 2013. Scientists think the dust was kicked up by a massive collision between two large asteroids. They say the smashup took place in the star's “” terrestrial zone,””” the region around stars where rocky planets like Earth take shape. NGC 2547-ID8 is a sun-like star located about 1,200 light-years from Earth in the constellation Vela. It is about 35 million years old, the same age our young sun was when its rocky planets were finally assembled via massive collisions. The recent impact witnessed by Spitzer may be a sign of similar terrestrial planet building

Asteroides Ceres and Vesta seen by the Hubble space telescope - Asteroids Ceres and Vesta seen by the Hubble space telescope - Ceres and Vesta are the two largest bodies of the asteroid belt, a region located between Mars and Jupiter. Since August 2006, Ceres is considered a dwarf planet. Ceres (left) has a diameter of about 950 km. Image obtained in January 2004. The image on the right, obtained on 14 and 16 May 2007, shows the asteroid Vesta. Its diameter is about 530 km. These Hubble Space Telescope images of Vesta and Ceres show two of the most massive asteroids in the asteroid belt, a region between Mars and Jupiter. At least 100,000 asteroids inhabit the asteroid belt, a reservoir of leftover material from the formation of our solar-system planets 4.6 billion years ago. The International Astronomical Union named Ceres one of three dwarf planets in 2006. Ceres is round like planets in our solar system, but it does not clear debris out of its orbit as our planets do. The image at right was taken on May 14 and 16, 2007. Using Hubble, astronomers mapped Vesta's southern hemisphere, a region dominated by a giant impact crater formed by a collision billions of years ago. The crater is 285 miles (456 kilometers) across, which is almost equal to Vesta's 330-mile (530-kilometer) diameter. The Hubble image of Ceres on the left, taken on January 2004, reveals bright and dark regions on the asteroid's surface that could be topographic features, such as craters, and/or areas containing different surface material. Ceres has a diameter of approximately 950 kilometers

Asteroide Vesta seen by the Hubble Space Telescope - Asteroid Vesta - Photo obtained in visible view of the Vesta asteroid in May 1996 by the Hubble Space Telescope. The images reveal a huge impact crater 450 km in diameter south of the asteroid; the original image is at the top left, modeled in 3D on the right. Astronomers have used the Hubble Space telescope to discover a giant impact crater on the asteroid Vesta. <BR>Left is a Hubble Space Telescope image of the asteroid Vesta, taken in May 1996 when the asteroid was 110 million miles from Earth. The asymmetry of the asteroid and “” nub”” and the south pole is suggestive that it suffered a large impact event. Center is a color-encoded elevation map of Vesta that clearly shows the giant 285- mile diameter impact basin and “” bull 's-eye”” central peak. Right is a 3-D computer model of the asteroid Vesta synthesized from Hubble topographic data. The crater's 8-mile high central peak can clearly be seen near the pole. At the bottom an elevation map has been reconstructed and clearly shows in blue the large impact basin and its central peak (in red)
