James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) - Artist View - The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) - Artist view - The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will replace the Hubble Space Telescope in 2014. Equipped with a 6.5 m mirror, he will observe the universe mainly in infrared. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a large, infrared - optimized space telescope scheduled for launch in 2014. Equipped with a large mirror 6.5 meters (21.3 feet) in diameter, it will find the first galaxies that formed in the early Universe, connecting the Big Bang to our own Milky Way Galaxy and will reside in an orbit about 1.5 million km (1 million miles) from the Earth

Lakes of Nayriz, Iran, seen by satellite - Neyriz Lakes, Iran - In southern Iran's Fars province, the lakes of Bakhtegan and Tashk, better known as lakes of Nayriz “” appear on this image taken by ALOS, a four-ton Japanese observation satellite. Lake Bakhtegan (central) and Lake Tashk (upper), located in the Nayriz basin, are dirty lakes in the south-east of the Zagros Mountains, whose water levels fluctuate with rain and snow in the mountains. Lake Bakhtegan, the second largest lake in Iran, is fed mainly by the Kour River, while Lake Tashk receives the overflow from the marecages at its western extremite and from an important permanent north-west source. Although normally separated by narrow strips of land, during the years of heavy rain they can join and form only one lake. Similarly, after several years of low rains, as in 1934 and 1971, the lakes can be completely low except for the points closest to the springs. The two lakes, their delta and the morecages associated with the springs have been recognized as “wetlands of international importance”. The Bakhtegan National Park, a natural park, sanctuary and reserve, is visible in the center and top of the picture above Lake Bakhtegan. The ALOS satellite (Advanced Land Observing Satellite) took this image on 6 March 2009 with the AVNIR-2 (Advanced Visible and Near Infrared Radiometer type - 2) instrument, which is designed to map emergeal land and vegetation cover in visible and near-infrared spectral bands with a resolution of 10 m. Lakes Bakhtegan (centre) and Tashk (top), together known as the Neyriz Lakes, in the Fars Province in southern Iran are featured in this image acquired by ALOS, Japan's four - tonne Earth observation satellite, on 6 March 2009 with its Advanced Visible and Near Infrare
Tongatapu satellite view - Tongatapu seen from space: Tongatapu Island (Kingdom of Tonga) observed by Sentinel-2A satellite on 23 May 2016 - The island of Tongatapu and the nearby smaller islands - all part of the Kingdom of Tonga archipelago in the southern Pacific Ocean - are pictured in this Sentinel-2A image from 23 May 2016 - Tonga's population is spread across 36 of Tonga's 169 islands, but about 70% live on this main island. The capital, Nuku alofa, sits on the island's north coast and along the Fanga'uta Lagoon. The lagoon's mangroves provide an important breeding ground for fish and birds
Earth seen by satellite DSCOVR - Earth seen by satellite DSCOVR: Earth photo obtained by satellite Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) on July 6, 2015. This satellite, launched on 11 February 2015, and placed in orbit 1.6 million km, at the point of Lagrange L1 (about 4 times farther than the Moon's orbit), provides views of the Earth as a whole - The journey has been a long one for the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR). Once known as Triana, the satellite was conceived in 1998 to provide continuous views of Earth, to monitor the solar wind, and to measure fluctuations in Earth's albedo. The mission was put on hold in 2001, and the part-built satellite ended up in storage for several years with an uncertain future. In 2008, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), NASA, and the U.S. Air Force decided to refurbish and update the spacecraft for launch - On February 11, 2015, DSCOVR was finally lofted into space by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. After journey of about 1.6 million kilometers (1 million miles) to the L1 Lagrange Point, the satellite and its Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) has returned its first view of the entire sunlit side of Earth. At L1-four times farther than the orbit of the Moon - the gravitational pull of the Sun and Earth cancel out, providing a stable orbit and a continuous view of Earth. The image above was made by combining information from Epic's red, green, and blue bands. (Bands are narrow regions of the electromagnetic spectrum to which a remote sensing instrument responds. When EPIC collects data, it takes a series of 10 images at different bands - from ultraviolet to near infrared.)
Earth observed at night by satellite. Mosaic of hundreds of images obtained by four satellites DMSP (Defense Meteorological Satellite Program) from October 1994 to March 1995 - The image is a composite of hundreds of pictures made by the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) currently operates four satellites carrying the Operational Linescan System (OLS) in low-altitude polar orbits. Three of these satellites record nighttime data. The DMSP-OLS has a unique capability to detect low levels of visible-near infrared (VNIR) radiance at night. With the OLS 'VIS' band data it is possible to detect clouds illuminated by moonlight, plus lights from cities, towns, industrial sites, gas flares, and ephemeral events such as fires and lightning-illuminated clouds. October 1994 - March 1995 DMSP nighttime data collected when moonlight was low. Using the OLS thermal infrared band, areas containing clouds were removed and the remaining area used in the time series: Earth by night
Shikotan island seen from space - Shikotan island seen from space - Shikotan island (Shikotan) is one of the largest islands of the Kuril archipelago, located in the Pacific Ocean between the Kamchatka Peninsula and northern Japan. In this image obtained by the EO-1 satellite on 14 February 2011, this volcanic island is surrounded by ice forming spirals in the wind. Ostrov Shikotan (or Shikotan - to) is a volcanic island at the southern end of the Kuril chain. Shikotan lies along the extreme southern edge of winter sea ice in the Northern Hemisphere. The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA's Earth Observing - 1 (EO - 1) satellite captured this natural - color image of Shikotan on February 14, 2011. The island is surrounded by sea ice - - swirling shapes of ghostly blue - gray. The ice in this image may have formed in a matter of several days, and it is prone to moving with currents. North of the western end of Shikotan, eddies have shaped the ice into rough circles. The eddies may result from opposing winds - - winds from the north pushing the ice southward, and winds from the southwest pushing the ice towards the northeast. Part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, the island is seismically active
James Webb Space Telescope Mirrors (JWST) - Testing of the JWST's mirrors - Six of the 18 JWST (James Webb Space Telescope) mirrors seen at Nasa's Marshall Space Center. These mirrors will be tested there to ensure they will withstand the extreme temperatures of space vacuum. The JWST will replace the Hubble Space Telescope in 2014. Equipped with a 6.5 m mirror, he will observe the universe mainly in infrared. Six of the 18 James Webb Space Telescope mirror segments are being moved into the X - ray and Cryogenic Facility, or XRCF, at Nasa's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., to eventually experience temperatures dipping to a chilling - 414 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure they can withstand the extreme space environments. The test chamber takes approximately five days to cool a mirror segment to cryogenic temperatures. Marshall's X - ray & Cryogenic Facility is the world's largest X - ray telescope test facility and a unique, cryogenic, clean room optical test location.
Volcanic ash cloud in Iceland - Volcanic ash cloud from Iceland - The volcanic ash plume caused by the eruption of the Eyjafjoell volcano (Eyjafjallajoekull) in Iceland seen by the Envisat satellite on 11 May 2010. A heavy plume of ash from Iceland's Eyjafjallajoekull volcano is visible travelling over the Atlantic in this Envisat Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer image acquired on 11 May 2010. The narrow shape of the ash cloud indicates a lot of wind is blowing in a southerly direction towards the west of Ireland. Also visible, the area around the Hakla volcano (east of Eyjafjallajoekull) now appears black as the snow and ice that surrounded it in April have been completely covered by ash. The volcano has been emitting steam and ash since its recent eruptions began on 20 March

Tempete Xynthia above France seen by satellite - Storm Xynthia above France seen by satellite - The Xynthia tempete seen by Aqua satellite on 27 February 2010. An extratropical cyclone named Xynthia brought hurricane - force winds and high waves to Western Europe. Winds as fast as 200 kilometers (125 miles) per hour reached as far inland as Paris, and at the storm's peak, hurricane - force winds extended from Portugal to the Netherlands. Hundreds of people had to take refuge from rising waters on their rooftops. By March 1, at least 58 people had died, some of them struck by falling trees. Most of the deaths occurred in France, but the storm also caused casualties in England, Germany, Belgium, Spain, and Portugal. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite captured this image of Western Europe, acquired in two separate overpasses on February 27, 2010. MODIS captured the eastern half of the image around 10:50 UTC, and the western half about 12:30 UTC. Forming a giant comma shape, clouds stretch from the Atlantic Ocean to northern Italy

Ol Doinyo Lengai - Volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai - Ol Doinyo Lengai Volcano is an active volcano located in Tanzania in the Great Rift Valley. Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only volcano in the world to emit carbonatite. Image obtained from the EO-1 satellite on 12 September 2009. Volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcano located in Tanzania in the great rift valley. It is the only known volcano producing carbonatite. The lava of Ol Doinyo Lengai is extremely cool (500 - 600* C, compared to 1,160* C for typical basaltic lava) and relatively fluid. Ol Doinyo Lengai alternates between eruptions of liquid lava that form lava lakes and fountains (called effusive eruptions) and explosive eruptions that build large cinder and ash cones. The new cone and crater are clearly visible in the center of the image acquired by satellite EO-1 on September 12, 2009. The dark spot in the crater may be fresh lava erupted from a new volcanic vent. Gray ash covers the volcano and much of the surrounding landscape

Cyprus view by satellite - Cyprus seen from satellite: Image obtained by satellite Sentinel-2A on 22 December 2015 - The third largest island in the Mediterranean, Cyprus is about 240 km long and 100 km wide. It is located on the Anatolian plate and therefore belongs geologically to Asia, but politically it is a member of the EU - The Troodos mountains dominate the centre of the island and include Mount Olympus, the country's highest mountain at 1952 m - The capital and largest city, Nicosia, sits between the two mountain ranges. Since 1974 the island has been split between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot populations, with the line of separation running through the city - Image taken on December 22nd 2015 by Sentinel-2A satellite
Lake Chad seen by satellite in 2007 - Lake Chad as seen by satellite in 2007 - Lake Chad seen by Envisat satellite on 19 December 2007. This Envisat image highlights Lake Chad, a freshwater lake located in central Africa at the junction of Chad, Cameroon, Nigeria and Niger. Lake Chad, once Africa's third largest inland water body, is located in West Africa's Sahel region - a transition zone between the Sahara Desert to the north and savannas and woodlands to the south. Because the lake is shallow, between 1 m in the northwest and 7 m in the south, it has always undergone seasonal fluctuations. However, it has shrunk dramatically over the last four decades due to a decrease in rainfall and an increase in the amount of water used for irrigation projects. Lake Chad's surface area was 25 000 sq km in the early 1960s, compared with 1350 sq km in 2001. Lake Chad is fed primarily by the Chari and Logone Rivers, which are both located in the southwest and flow northward into the lake, which doubles in size during the rainy season. This 19 December 2007 image was acquired by the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) instrument on Envisat, working in Full Resolution mode

North and South Malosmadulu Atoll are in the Maldives, an island republic in the northern Indian Ocean, southwest of India. The Maldives are made up of a chain of 1,192 small coral islands, which are grouped into clusters of atolls. Arguably the lowest - lying country in the world, the average elevation is just 1 meter above sea level. The natural - color ASTER image of the Malosmadulu Atoll was acquired on December 22, 2002, and is centered near 5.3 degrees North latitude, 73.9 degrees West longitude
Europe at night - Europe at night - Europe at night by satellite. Mosaic of hundreds of images obtained by DMSP (Defense Meteorological Satellite Program) satellites in 2003. This image shows human - generated nighttime lights in Europe for the calendar year 2003, based on observations by the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Operational Line Scanner. In this image, oceans appear black, landmasses appear in varying shades of blue, and lights appear yellow - white. Because these images focus on human impact, they do not include other (natural) light sources. Besides assembling cloud - free images, data visualizers carefully excluded sunlight, moonlight, and light from the Northern Hemisphere aurora
Auckland Region (New Zealand) satellite view - Auckland, New Zealand - Auckland Region, the largest urban area in New Zealand, in the North Island, viewed by Landsat satellite - 7 August 27, 2002. Auckland, New Zealand's largest city, is located on the country's North Island. Nearly a third of New Zealand's population lives in Auckland - - more than three million people. This natural - color (photo - like) image of Auckland was acquired on August 27, 2002, by Nasa's Landsat 7 satellite. The most densely developed areas appear white and gray, while suburban areas appear grayish green - - a mixture of houses, streets, and lawns. The city spreads out across various peninsulas surrounding Tamaki Strait and other bays and inlets. The city has been built up around the Auckland Volcanic Field; within a 20 - kilometer (12.4 - mile) radius of the heart of the city, there are 49 volcanoes, most of them small cones less than 150 meters (492 feet) high. Many of them have been protected as parks or non - residential development, such as ball fields, and so they stand out as green circles of vegetation against the surrounding gray and white cityscape. Among the largest of the volcanoes is Rangitoto Island, which sits offshore of the city between the waters of Tamaki Strait and Hauraki Gulf. The last eruption in this volcanic field appears to have occurred about 600 years ago. The nature of volcanic activity in the area is different from the subduction - driven volcanism elsewhere on the North Island, such as at Mount Ruapehu. It results from the city's location above a mantle plume, a hot spot about 100 kilometers below ground where temperatures are high enough to melt rock. The melted rock has a low viscosity, and it flows easily up through the overlying rock

This Envisat image, acquired on 14 January 2009, features the Congo River Basin's rainforests, the second largest in the world after the Amazon, and the Congo River, Africa's second longest river after the Nile. The basin covers an area of more than 4 million km. Its expansive forests spread across the Democratic Republic of Congo (visible to the east of the Congo River), most of the Republic of the Congo (visible to the west of the Congo River), Gabon (visible in dark green along the left side), Equatorial Guinea (above Gabon), and southern parts of Cameroon and the Central African Republic
Florida seen by Envisat - Florida seen from space - This image taken by Envisat shows Florida Detroit through which the Loop Current “” flows eastward out of the Gulf of Mexico before joining the “Gulf Stream” which passes off the western coast of the United States and Newfoundland (not visible here). Scientists are monitoring this near area because they are concerned about the possibility that the winds may push the Black Marea of the Gulf of Mexico (visible west of Florida) south into the Loop Current “or that the current may extend northward to reach the oil slick. If oil from this slick were to penetrate into the Loop Current, it could be drained towards the Florida Keys archipelago (this set of circular islands associated with coral reefs off the tip of Florida) and further east to the Gulf Stream. By combining sea surface state and current circulation information with Envisat Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) data on black maree, analysts are able to determine in which direction the limits of the oil slick can move. The Bahamas (lower right) is a string of islands, sandbanks and shoals stretching 1,400 km between Florida and Hispaniola Island. All these islands are surrounded by coral reefs. About 5% of the total coral reefs of the planet are concentrated in this area. The other States of the United States visible in the image are Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. This image was taken by Envisat's Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) camera on April 1, 2010 in full resolution mode, which allows to distinguish 300 m ground level details. This Envisat image shows the Straits of Florida, the area where the Lo
Najd Plateau - Saudi Arabia - Najd plateau - Saudi Arabia - Image obtained by Envisat satellite centree on the Najd region of Saudi Arabia. The circular shapes visible at the top and left center of the image are irrigated fields. This Envisat image is centred over the plateau region of Najd located in Saudi Arabia, bounded on the west by the Al Hijaz mountains and on all other sides by desert sands. A curious feature about this image are the irrigated fields shown as grey and black circular patterns at the top and centre left of the image. Image taken on July 13 2003
Le Piton de la Fournaise, Ile de la Reunion - Piton de la Fournaise, Reunion island - Le Piton de la Fournaise seen by satellite EO - 1 on 16 January 2009. This shield volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Considered one of the world's most active volcanoes, Piton de la Fournaise occupies the east - southeastern end of Reunion Island in the western Indian Ocean. It is a shield volcano with a low, broad shape that resemble an ancient warrior shield. The volcano sports an 8 - kilometer - (5 - mile -) wide crater that slopes eastward to the coast. Within that crater sits a lava shield, Dolomieu, and most of Piton de la Fournaise's historic eruptions have occurred from the summit or flanks of Dolomieu. The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on Nasa's Earth Observing - 1 satellite captured this image of Piton de la Fournaise on January 16, 2009. Dolomieu is the circular feature at the center of the large crater. Lava flows from earlier eruptions have left their marks around Dolomieu, in the form of dark rivulets of rock that head mostly eastward towards the shore. On the west side of Dolomieu, few dark rivers of rock appear, as most lava flows have curved towards the north or south. Little vegetation thrives near Dolomieu, but farther away from the lava shield, vegetation appears bright green
Iceland seen from the satellite ENVISAT - Iceland seen by satellite - Iceland covered with snow on 4 October 2008. This Envisat image, acquired on 4 October, features the island of Iceland covered in the first snow of the 2008 winter. More than 11 percent of the island is covered by glaciers. The Vatnajokull glacier, the largest glacier in Europe, is located in the southeast where the white area is more prominent. Reykjavik, the country's capital, is located in the southwest - slightly inland from the boot - shaped peninsula on the bottom left that extends out into the Atlantic Ocean. Brilliant colours of blue - green are visible swirling in the waters off the south and western coasts. These are caused by large concentrations of phytoplankton, which form the basis of the ocean's food chain and have an essential role in the global ecosystem

Volcano Fogo - Cape Verde - Volcano Fogo - Cape Verde islands - Fogo Island with its highest volcano 2800 meters south of the Cape Verde archipelago. Image obtained from the EO-1 satellite on 10 June 2009. Fogo is one of the Cape Verde Islands located roughly 640 kilometers off the westernmost tip of Africa, Fogo received its name from English colonists around 1500 AD. The Advanced Land Imager on Nasa's EO - 1 satellite captured this detailed image of the volcano on June 10, 2009. The volcano's most distinctive feature, its nine - kilometer wide caldera, Cha Caldera, is shown in this image. The eastern half of the crater wall is gone, erased in a massive collapse deep in its ancient history. In the center of the crater, a steep cone named Pico rises about 100 meters above the crater rim (more than a kilometer from the crater floor). The young peak reaches 2,829 meters (9,281 feet) above sea level, making it the island's highest point. The crater is inhabited. A straight road cuts between the crater wall and Pico, ending near the wind that erupted in 1995. Bright white dots on the north side of the crater are villages. Residents of the Cha Caldera evacuated during the eruption
Cyclones on the South Atlantic - Cyclonic clouds - Two mutually feeding cyclones seen over the cold waters of the South Atlantic Ocean by the Terra satellite on 29 April 2009. North is left. It took the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Nasa's Terra satellite a full five minutes to fly over this expansive cloud pattern on April 29, 2009. The sprawling S”” - shaped swirl is actually two cyclones that seem to be feeding on each other. Polar cyclones often form as a result of low - pressure systems over the ocean, and usually bring winds and heavy snow. MODIS acquired this photo - like image over the cold waters of the South Atlantic Ocean, where winter is approaching. The image has been rotated, so that north is toward the left. The spot of green in the upper left corner of the image is coastal water off the southern tip of Africa.

Malta, an independent republic, consists of a small group of islands located in the Mediterranean Sea south of Sicily, with a total area of 316 square kilometers. The capital and leading port of the country is Valletta, which appears as a gray patch around the two deep inlets on Malta's northern coastline. This natural - color image was acquired on August 12 2009, by the EO - 1 satellite
Great Barrier Reef in Australia from satellite - The Great Barrier Reef in Australia from satellite - The world's largest coral reef that extends off Queensland, Australia, seen by Envisat satellite on 18 May 2008. This Envisat satellite image features one of the natural wonders of the world - the Great Barrier Reef in the Coral Sea off the east coast of Queensland, Australia. Australian researchers have discovered that Envisat's Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) sensor can detect coral bleaching down to 10 m deep. This means Envisat could potentially map coral bleaching on a global scale. MERIS acquired this image on 18 May 2008, working in Full Resolution mode to yield a spatial resolution of 300 m
Great Barrier Reef in Australia from satellite - The Great Barrier Reef in Australia from satellite - The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef in the world, extending over 2000 km off Queensland, Australia. Satellite image obtained by Terra satellite on 8 August 2004. The Great Barrier Reef arches over 2000 kilometers along the northeast coast of Australia. The white calcium carbonate that coats the coral reflects light, making the water above the reef appear bright blue from space. This phenomenon allows the reef to be visible in satellite images, such as this one, acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Nasa's Terra satellite on August 8, 2004

The south - eastern parts of Iran (top) and the Arabian Peninsula are featured in this image, acquired by Envisat's Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer on 4 February 2011. The closest point between the two Middle Eastern countries is the Strait of Hormuz (centre), which links the Persian Gulf (left) with the Gulf of Oman (upper right) and the Arabian Sea (lower right). Several countries are visible on the peninsula: the United Arab Emirates (top left), Oman (tip and bottom right) and Saudi Arabia (far left and bottom)
Allee de Von Karman - Von Karman vortices - Allee of Karman swirls in the clouds caused by the encounter between the wind and the mountain peak of Alejandro Selkirk Island (Juan Fernandez Archipelago) off Chile. False colour image obtained by Landsat 7 satellite on 15 September 1999. Each of these swirling clouds is the result of a meteorological phenomenon known as a von Karman vortex. These vortices appeared over Alexander Selkirk Island in the southern Pacific Ocean. Rising precipitously from the surrounding waters, the island's highest point is nearly a mile (1.6 km) above sea level. As wind - driven clouds encounter this obstacle, they flow around it to form large, spinning eddies. This false color image was acquired by Landsat 7 satellite on September 15, 1999
Christchurch and Banks Peninsula (New Zealand) view from space - Christchurch and Banks Peninsula (New Zealand) - Banks Peninsula and Christchurch City viewed by Landsat 7 satellite on 25 September 2001. The Banks Peninsula is an ancient erode volcano forming a peninsula on the east coast of the South Island. The Banks Peninsula is formed from the overlapping cones of the extinct Lyttelton and Akaroa volcanoes. Subsequent erosion of the cones formed the heavily dissected terrain visible in the image, and sea level rise led to the creation of several harbors around the Peninsula. Lake Ellesmere is visible at bottom left. Image taken by Landsat - 7 satellite on spetember 25, 2001
Cuba, Florida and Bahamas viewed by the Envisat satellite - Cuba, Florida and Bahamas from satellite Envisat - Florida (top left), Cuba (bottom) and the Bahamas viewed by the Envisat satellite on 24 January 2004. The shallow blue waters of the Bahamas as seen from Envisat 800 km away in space, acquired by the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) on 24 January 2004. The Bahamas consist of a chain of islands and shallow water banks extending 1400 km from Florida to the island of Hispaniola. All the islands are surrounded by coral reefs - 5% of all the world's coral reefs are concentrated here. At the top left of the image is the southern tip of Florida, reaching from the circular Lake Okeechobee down through the Everglades all the way to Key West. The top of the curved archipelago of islands and associated coral reefs known as the Florida Keys is also visible. At the image base is the island of Cuba, 145 km south of Florida: the shaded area on the south face of the island is the swampy Zapata Peninsula National Park, while the rounded dark zone east of it corresponds to the verdant Sierra Del Escambray mountain range, including the 1160 - metre - high Pico San Juan, Cuba's second highest peak. Between Florida and Cuba is the Cay Sal bank, appearing as a small area of light blue water. To the east is Andros Island, which can be seen, like most Bahaman islands, to be located on the east side of a shallowly - submerged water platform. The Biminis are formed from the top left of this same platform. Above Andros Island is Grand Bahama, with Nassau on its east side
Hurricane Ike seen by satellite - Hurricane Ike above Cuba - Hurricane Ike seen over Cuba on 8 September 2008. Image obtained by the American satellites GOES and TRMM. Nasa's TRMM spacecraft observed this view of Hurricane Ike on September 8, 2008 as slammed into Cuba. At this time the storm had weakened to a category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of 85 knots (98 mph) and a pressure reading of 960 millibars. Hurricane - force winds were extending outward 60 miles from the center, while tropical storm - force winds extended up to 200 miles from the center. The cloud cover is taken by TRMM's Visible and Infrared Scanner and the GOES spacecraft
Richat structure - Mauritania - satellite view - Richat structure, Mauritania, seen by satellite - Richat structure is a geological formation of volcanic origin in Mauritania. This “eye” measures 50 km in diameter. This image is a combination of an image obtained by the Landsat satellite in 1987 and a radar image obtained from the Space Shuttle (SRTM) in 2000. The relief is exaggerated by about 6 times. The picture covers an area of 68 km by 112 km. This prominent circular feature, known as the Richat Structure, in the Sahara desert of Mauritania is often noted by astronauts because it forms a conspicuous 50 - kilometer - wide (30 - mile - wide) bull's - eye on the otherwise rather featureless expanse of the desert. Initially mistaken for a possible impact crater, it is now known to be an eroded circular anticline (structural dome) of layered sedimentary rocks. Extensive sand dunes occur in this region and the interaction of bedrock topography, wind, and moving sand is evident in this scene. Note especially how the dune field ends abruptly short of the cliffs at the far right as wind from the northeast (lower right) apparently funnels around the cliff point, sweeping clean areas near the base of the cliff. Note also the small isolated peak within the dune field. That peak captures some sand on its windward side, but mostly deflects the wind and sand around its sides, creating a sand - barren streak that continues far downwind. This view was generated from a Landsat satellite image in 1987 draped over an elevation model produced by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). The view uses a 6 - times vertical exaggeration to greatly enhance topographic expression. For vertical scale, note that the height of the mesa ridge in the back center of the view is about 285 meters (about 935 feet) tall. Colors of the scene were enhanced by use of a combination of visible and infrared bands, which helps to differentiate bedrock (browns), sand (yellow, so
Satellite photo of the Rub al Khali desert - Rub 'al Khali desert seen from space - Rub al-Khali (the Empty Quarter), is one of the largest deserts and the largest uninterrupted expanse of sand in the world. It covers nearly 600,000 square kilometres in the Arabian Peninsula, located mostly in Saudi Arabia and in the territories of Yemen, Oman and the United Arab Emirates. The image obtained by the Landsat-7 satellite on 26 August 2001 shows the sand dune fields separated by flat and saline stretches, sebkha (or sabkha). The Arabian Peninsula's Empty Quarter, known as Rub 'al Khali, is the world's largest sand sea, holding about half as much sand as the Sahara Desert. The Empty Quarter covers 583,000 square kilometers (225,000 square miles), and stretches over parts of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates. The Enhanced Thematic Mapper on Nasa's Landsat 7 satellite captured this image of the Empty Quarter on August 26, 2001. The area shown resides in southeastern Saudi Arabia, midway between the United Arab Emirates to the north and Oman in the south. Parallel rows of salmon - pink and white alternate to create a rippling pattern. White salt flats, known as sebkhas or sabkhas, separate the dunes. These salt - encrusted plains vary in hardness, in some places creating a surface strong enough to drive a vehicle over, in other places disappearing into sand. The sand dunes soar above the salt plains between them
Aral Sea view from 1977 to 2006 - Aral sea 1977 to 2006 - The Aral Sea observed by Landsat satellites from 1977 to 2006. In 30 years, 60% of this lake has disappeared. Left, June 4, 1977, middle, September 17, 1989, right, May 27, 2006. The Aral Sea on June 4, 1977, Sept. 17, 1989, and May 27, 2006. The Aral Sea lies between Uzbekistan (to the south) and Kazakhstan (to the north). Once the fourth largest lake in the world, the Aral Sea is now less than half of its original size. The Aral Sea is a terminal, or endorheic, sea (meaning no water flows out of it). It is fed by the Syr Darya and the Amu Darya Rivers, but Soviet river diversions for irrigation made over 40 years ago have starved the Aral Sea of water. In 2001, the World Bank funded the construction of an 8 - mile dam to separate the North and South Aral, and thus save the smaller and less polluted North Aral Sea. The North Aral has been growing since completion of the Kok - Aral Dam in the summer of 2005. Repairs and updates to the inefficient Soviet - era canals have also played a role in the rejuvenation of the North Aral

The Bahamas satellite views - Satellite image of the Bahamas - The Bahamas viewed by the Aqua satellite on 12 February 2009. East of southern Florida, large swaths of ocean water glow peacock blue. These waters owe their iridescence to their shallow depths. Near Florida and Cuba, the underwater terrain is hilly, and the crests of many of these hills including the islands of the Bahamas. On February 12, 2009, relatively clear skies allowed the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Nasa's Aqua satellite an unobstructed view of the region. The most striking feature of this image is the Great Bahama Bank, a massive underwater hill underlying Andros Island in the west, Eleuthera Island in the east, and multiple islands in between. To the north, another bank underlies another set of islands, including Grand Bahama. The varied colors of these banks suggest their surfaces are somewhat uneven. The banks' distinct contours, sharply outlined in dark blue, indicate that the ocean floor drops dramatically around them. In fact, over the banks, the water depth is often less than 10 meters (33 feet), but the surrounding basin plunges to depths as low as 4,000 meters (13,100 feet)
Earth - The geoid - Earth's geoid - The Earth's geoid, an image of the inegalites of the Earth's gravitation field. Image centred on Indonesia. Image obtained by the GOCE satellite in 2011. ESA's GOCE mission has delivered the most accurate model of the 'geoid' ever produced, which will be used to further our understanding of how Earth works. A precise model of Earth's geoid is crucial for deriving accurate measurements of ocean circulation, sea - level change and terrestrial ice dynamics. The geoid is also used as a reference surface from which to map the topographical features on the planet. In addition, a better understanding of variations in the gravity field will lead to a deeper understanding of Earth's interior, such as the physics and dynamics associated with volcanic activity and earthquakes
