The solar system - Our solar system - Artwork - Illustration of the planets of the solar system. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Kuiper's belt is shown. Diagram of the sun and planets showing their relative scale. The bluish haze beyond the orbit of Neptune represents the inner Kuiper Belt where dwell Pluto and other minor planets. The relative distances of the planets are NOT to scale
Voyager and Exoplanets Probe - Voyager entering an alien solar system Artist's view showing one of the probes approaching another solar system
Artist's view of the solar system - Solar system artwork - Artist's view of the solar system. Planets are represented in order of proximity to the sun. From left to right: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. A comet and a galaxy are also represented. Solar system artwork. The planets are shown from the nearest planet of the Sun, Mercury (left), to the farthest (right), Neptune. A comet and a galaxy are shown. Since August 2006, Pluto is no more a planet but a dwarf planet called 134340 Pluto
Arecibo Message - Arecibo Message: Arecibo Message is a radio message that was sent to space on November 16, 1974 towards the globular cluster M13, 25 000 light-years from Earth - When this binary message is divided into 73 groups of 23 characters it forms this drawing that includes the numbers from one to ten, the atomic numbers of the hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and phosphorus, DNA structure, a 1.76m man, Earth's population, our solar system, and a representation of the Arecibo radiotelescope - Arecibo message is a radio message that was sent into space, at the globular star cluster M13 on november 16 1974. This binary message describes numbers, atomic numbers, DNA, man dimension, our solar system and the Arecibo radiotelescope
La formation du Système solaire - Vue d'artiste - Solar system formation - Artist view - Vue d'artiste de la naissance du système solaire. After the explosion of a supernova, an interstellar cloud of gas and dust heated and contracted to give birth to our star. In a few tens of millions of years, debris assembles around the sun and planets form. Following a supernova explosion, a cloud of gas and dust start to collapse forming a solar nebula. Particles around spinning, begin to stick together through accretion to make planetesimals, and then planets
Galileo satellites - Artist view - Galileo Satellites - Artist view - Artist view of four Galileo In - Orbit Validation (IOV) satellites intended to validate the Galileo positioning system. The Galileo network of European satellites will consist of 30 satellites at approximately 24,000 km of altitude (27 operationals, 3 reserve). Artist view of the four Galileo In - Orbit Validation satellites. The operational Galileo system will consist of 30 satellites (27 operational+3 active spares), deployed in circular Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) at an altitude of 23,616 km altitude

Satellite Galileo - Artist view - Galileo Satellite - Artist view - Galileo Full Operational Capability (FOC) satellite artist view. The Galileo network of European satellites will consist of 30 satellites at approximately 24,000 km of altitude (27 operationals, 3 reserve). The working nucleus of Galileo, Europe's independent satellite navigation system, is already in place and active. The first satellites in space and a world - spanning ground segment have come together to perform the very first solely European navigation fixes, and validate the design of the Galileo system. To turn Galileo into something that everyone can use freely comes down to expanding its scale: for receivers to fix location a minimum of four satellites must be visible for anywhere on the planet, which means launching many more satellites and expanding Galileo's ground infrastructure. The complete Galileo constellation will consist of 30 satellites along three orbital planes in medium Earth orbit (including two spares per orbit). The result will be Europe's largest ever fleet of satellites, operating in the new environment of medium - Earth orbit
The cloud of Oort - Illustration - The Oort cloud. Artwork - The Oort Cloud is a vast body envelope orbiting well beyond the orbit of the planets of the solar system. Comets would come from that cloud. The Oort Cloud is a huge spherical cloud surrounding our Solar System. Extending about 30 trillion kilometers (18 trillion miles) from the Sun, it was first proposed in 1950 by Dutch astronomer Jan Oort. The vast distance of the Oort cloud is considered to be the outer edge of the Solar System where the Sun's influence ends. It contains billions of icy bodies and seems to be the birth place of comets

Pioneer Plate - The Pioneer Plate - The Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 probes have embarked on a plate, called the Pioneer Plate, containing a message intended for potential aliens. On this engraved metal plate are depicted a naked man and woman, the location of our Sun as well as 14 pulsars, the trajectory of the probe in the solar system... Pioneer 10 was launched on 3 March 1972 with as its first destination, the Jupiter Planet, which it flew over on 3 December 1973; it was the first space probe to approach this planet; it was also the first space probe to leave the solar system. The Pioneer F spacecraft, destined to be the first man made object to escape from the solar system into interstellar space, carries this pictorial plaque. It is designed to show scientifically educated inhabitants of some other star system, who might intercept it millions of years from now, when Pioneer was launched, from where, and by what kind of beings. The design is etched into a 6 inch by 9 inch gold - anodized aluminum plate, attached to the spacecraft's attenna support struts in a position to help shield it from erosion by interstellar dust. The radiating lines at left represents the positions of 14 pulsars, a cosmic source of radio energy, arranged to indicate our sun as the home star of our civilization. The “” 1 - “” symbols at the ends of the lines are binary numbers that represent the frequencies of these pulsars at the time of launch of Pioneer F relative of that to the hydrogen atom shown at the upper left with a “” 1”” unity symbol. The hydrogen atom is thus used as a “” universal clock,”” and the regular decrease in the frequencies of the pulsars will enable another civilization to determine the time that has elapsed since Pioneer F was launched. The hydrogen is also used as a “” universal yardstick”” for sizing the human figures and outline of the spacecraft shown on the right. The hydrogen wavelength, about 8 inches, multiplied by

Size Comparison: Earth and Jupiter - Jupiter and Earth compared - Comparison of the sizes of the Earth and Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system. Diameter of Earth: 12 756.28 km Diametre of Jupiter: 142,984 km Jupiter's diameter is over ten times greater than the Earth's. If you weigh 180 pounds on Earth, you would weigh 426 pounds at Jupiter's cloud tops. Jupiter is five times further from the Sun than the Earth. Jupiter is so large that its famous Great Red Spot (actually a giant, hurricane-like storm that's at least 400 years old) would easily swallow the Earth. Jupiter spins so fast on its axis that it bulges noticeably at its equator (a day on Jupiter is about ten hours long)
Comparison between Earth and Mars - Earth and Mars compared - Comparison at the scale of Earth and Mars sizes. The diameter of the planet Mars is half the diameter of the Earth. Mars' diameter is half that of the Earth's It has ten percent the mass If you weigh 180 pounds on Earth, you would weigh only 68 pounds on Mars. Mars is half again further from the Sun than the Earth The vast deserts of North Africa are no match for the planet-wide desert that is Mars. While the Earth is host to oceans of liquid water and has a relatively dense water-rich atmosphere, Mars is exceedingly dry, cold, and so far as we know, sterile. It is believed that Mars lost most of its water to space a long time ago, and any water that remains is frozen at the poles and locked deep in the ground as permafrost. It is an interesting coincidence that the total surface area of Mars is about the same as the surface area of dry land on the Earth

Artist's view of the solar system - Artist's view of the solar system. Planets are represented in order of proximity to the sun. On the right, the terrestrial planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth (and Moon) Mars; on the left, the gas giant planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. A comet, the asteroid belt and Pluto's orbit are also represented. Our solar system features eight planets, seen in this artist's diagram. Although there is some debate within the science community as to whether Pluto should be classified as a Planet or a dwarf planet, the International Astronomical Union has decided on the term plutoid as a name for dwarf planets like Pluto. This representation is intentionally fanciful, as the planets are depicted far closer together than they really are. Similarly, the bodies' relative sizes are inaccurate. This is done for the purpose of being able to depict the solar system and still represent the bodies with some detail. (Otherwise the Sun would be a mere speck, and the planets -even the majestic Jupiter - would be far too small to be seen.
La planete Neuf - Illustration - Planet Nine - Artwork: Vue d'artiste de la planete Neuf. The Ninth Planet is a hypothetical planet of the Solar System indirectly recorded, the existence of which is suggested by observing the orbits of several transneptunian objects. This planet would be gaseous, similar to Uranus or Neptune. A hypothetical planet in the outer reaches of the solar system orbits more than 700 times farther from the sun than earth does. A Super-earth, with an estimated mass of 10 Earths (approximately 5,000 times the mass of Pluto), a diameter two to four times that of Earth, and a highly elliptical orbit with an orbital period of approximately 15,000 years, the planet is shown as a ringed ice giant whose night side is illuminated by lightning and aurorae powered by galactic cosmic rays.
EDRS Relay Satellite Network - Artist's view - The European Data Relay Satellite System - EDRS - The European Data Relay Satellites (EDRS) programme is a geostationary orbit satellite network project enabling faster and better data transmission between satellites and ground stations using new communication technologies. EDRS will replace ESA's Artemis data relay satellite, which has been in operation since 2003 and will reach the end of life in the first half of the next decade. December 2008. Artist impression of European Data Relay Satellite (EDRS) system. EDRS is a network of satellites that will use geostationary satellites to communicate with both ground stations and other satellites - whose lower orbits restrict the time that they can 'see' any one ground station. Allowing low - Earth orbit satellites to deliver data continuously, instead of storing it on board for transmission while overflying a ground station, will increase the timeliness with which we receive data improving global communications, navigation and Earth observation
The Sumerian calendar - Artist view - The Moon and sixty - Artist view - Artist view of a crescent moon above a Sumerian temple. The Sumerian calendar was 360 days a year and was based on the phases of the Moon. Sixty, not ten, was the basis of Sumerian math. The Sumerian calendar, the farming 'tool - kit', was based on the phases of the Moon; 12 x 29.5 days. This produced a year equal to 360 days; a reasonable approximation, but not accurate over time. Every so many years an extra month had to be added, and an incredibly complex math system was used to make the adjustment

La formation du système solaire - Vue d'artiste - Artist's impression of the development of the Solar System - Vue d'artiste de planete en formation dans le disque de gaz et de dusts (disque protoplanetaire) autour de son toile. This artist's impression shows four stages of the development of the inner Solar System over a period of almost five billion years. The top panel shows the earliest stage where the debris disc around the Sun was composed of gas and tiny particles, typically less than one millimetre across. At the second stage the particles have formed large clumps, roughly 100 kilometers across and, similar to the asteroid Lutetia. These bodies in turn formed the rocky planets including the Earth, shown in the third panel down. Over the subsequent four billion years the surface of the Earth developed to what we know now under the influence of meteor bombardment that delivered volatile materials including water, and the evolution of life on its surface

The cloud of Oort - Illustration - The Oort cloud. Artwork - The Oort Cloud is a vast body envelope orbiting well beyond the orbit of the planets of the solar system. Comets would come from that cloud. Legendee version. It contains billions of icy bodies and seems to be the birth place of comets.Annotated image
Comparison of the sizes of the Moon, Earth and Mars - Earth moon and mars compared: Earth diameter: 12.756,28 km, March diameter: 6,790 km, Moon diameter: 3,474.8 km
Size comparison: Earth and Saturn - Saturn and the Earth compared - Saturn, the second largest planet in the solar system compared to Earth. Saturn's diameter is about nine times greater than the Earth's. If you weigh 180 pounds on Earth, you would weigh only 165 pounds at Saturn's cloud tops (despite Saturn's enormous mass, its density is so low that if you were able to stand atop Saturn's clouds, you would feel a pull of gravity slightly less than what you feel on the Earth's surface). Saturn is ten times further from the Sun than the Earth. Saturn has the honor of being the second-largest planet in the Solar System, though it has only 30% the mass of its jovian better Jupiter. Like Jupiter, Saturn is blanketed by thick clouds and is believed to have no solid surface except for a relatively small, Earth-size core of rock and metals

Comparison between the sizes of Earth, Pluto, Charon and the Moon
Comparison between Earth and Venus - Earth and Venus compared - Comparison at the scale of the sizes of Earth and Venus, seen here without their atmosphere. The size of the Venus planet is roughly the same as that of the Earth. This to-scale image suggests how the Earth and Venus might appear without their atmospheres. Venus' diameter is 86% that of the Earth's. It has 82% the mass. If you weigh 180 pounds on the Earth, you would weigh 163 pounds on Venus. Venus is about three-quarters the Earth's distance from the Sun. While Venus is roughly the same size and density as the Earth, it is otherwise a very different world. Earth's surface is a varied one, with liquid water covering three quarters of its surface. Those areas not under water have been highly modified by plate tectonics, weather, and life itself. Venus on the other hand is far too hot to host liquid water. Volcanoes, massive lava flows and the occasional impact crater characterize its surface. Latest observations suggest that Venus may periodically resurface itself completely - and catastrophic - through massive, planet-wide volcanic eruptions. The last such resurfacing “” event”” appears to have occurred about 500 million years ago

Dwarf planets - Dwarf planets Ceres, Pluto, and Eris compared - Comparison at the scale of dwarf planets. From left to right are represented Ceres, Pluto and Eris. Ceres was elevated from asteroid to the status of dwarf planet in 2006 when the International Astronomical Union (IAU) reviewed Pluto's status as the solar system's 9th planet. Pluto was subsequently demoted to dwarf planet. In this image, from left to right are the dwarf planets Ceres, Pluto, and Eris. Eris was discovered in 2003 and is now the largest of the known dwarf planets. It is believed to be slightly more massive than Pluto and follows a highly eccentric orbit that alternately brings it as close as the orbits of Neptune and Pluto and as far as over twice Pluto's furthest distance from the Sun. It was the discovery of Eris that prompted the re-evaluation of Pluto as a planet

Comparison between Earth, Mercury and the Moon - Earth, Mercury, and Earth's Moon compared - Comparison at the scale of the Earth's size, the planet Mercury and the Moon. The diameter of Mercury is about one third of that of the Earth. Mercury is a little larger than the Earth's Moon and is believed to be composed mostly of iron and rock, making it considerably denser than the Moon. Mercury also has a magnetic field about 1% as strong as the Earth's. Mercury's diameter is only one third that of the Earth's. It has only 6% the mass. If you weigh 180 pounds on the Earth, you would weigh 64 pounds on Mercury. Is only one-third the Earth's distance from the Su
Size comparison: Enceladus, Earth and Moon satellite - Enceladus, Earth, and Earth's Moon Compared - Saturn Enceladus satellite (500 km in diameter) compares with Earth and Moon. Enceladus is considered one of Saturn's major satellites, however it is quite diminutive when compared with the Earth and Earth's Moon. With a radius of only 160 miles, Enceladus could rest in the Gulf of Mexico with plenty of room to spare. Enceladus is one of the brightest objects in the Solar System. Where Earth's Moon has a surface reflectively about the same as charcoal, Enceladus is covered in water ice that reflects sunlight like freshly fallen snow
