GAIA satellite - Illustration - View of the European satellite GAIA against a milky lane background. The objective of the Gaia mission is to carry out the largest possible census of the stars of our Galaxy and to create a 3D map of a very precise 3D map. The satellite will determine the position, color and proper movement of a billion stars. Gaia was launched since Kourou on December 19, 2013. Artist's print of Gaia. Gaia is an ambitious mission to chart a three - dimensional map of our Galaxy, the Milky Way, in the process revealing the composition, formation and evolution of the Galaxy. Gaia will provide unprecedented positional and radial velocity measurements with the accuracies needed to produce a stereoscopic and kinematic census of about one billion stars in our Galaxy and throughout the Local Group. This amounts to about 1 per cent of the Galactic stellar population. Combined with astrophysical information for each star, provided by on - board multi - colour photometry, these data will have the precision necessary to quantify the early formation, and subsequent dynamical, chemical and star formation evolution of the Milky Way Galaxy. Additional scientific products include detection and orbital classification of tens of thousands of extra - solar planetary systems, a comprehensive survey of objects ranging from huge numbers of minor bodies in our Solar System, through galaxies in the nearby Universe, to some 500,000 remote quasars. It will also provide a number of stringent new tests of general relativity and cosmology. Gaia was launched from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana on December 19, 2013

Our galaxy -Artist's view - Our galaxy, the Milky Way - Artwork - Representation of our galaxy, the lactee path, with the position of our Sun. Following observations made in infrared by the Spitzer space telescope, astronomers believe that our galaxy is a spiral galaxy consisting of two main arms (Scutum-Centaurus and Perseus) visible from the extremities of a large central bar. Two smaller arms (Norma and Sagittarius) are located between the main arms. The main arms contain the highest densities in stars, the other two are essentially gas. A new spiral arm, called the arm of the kiloparsec Far-3, runs along the bar of the galaxy. Our sun is close to a small interrupted arm called Orion's arm, located between the arms of Sagittarius and Persee. The Lactee Way was previously thought to have four main arms. Using infrared images from Nasa's Spitzer Space Telescope, scientists have discovered that the Milky Way's elegant spiral structure is dominated by just two arms wrapping off the ends of a central bar of stars. Previously, our galaxy was thought to possess four major arms. This artist's concept illustrates the new view of the Milky Way, along with other findings presented at the 212th American Astronomical Society meeting in St. Louis, Mo. The galaxy's two major arms (Scutum-Centaurus and Perseus) can be seen attached to the ends of a thick central bar, while the two now-demoted minor arms (Norma and Sagittarius) are less distinct and located between the major arms. The major arms consist of the highest densities of both young and old stars; the minor arms are primarily filled with gas and pockets of star-forming activity. The artist's concept also includes a new spiral arm, called the “Far-3 kiloparsec arm,””” discovered via a radio-telescope survey of gas in the Milky Way. This arm is shorter than the two major arms and li
Constellation of the Southern Cross - The Southern Cross - The Southern Cross and the Alpha and Beta stars of Centaurus. Crux, the Southern Cross, is the smallest constellation in the sky yet one of the most distinctive, at least to those of us who live in the southern hemisphere. It was once part of Centaurus, where the bright stars Acrux and Mimosa could easly be imagined as the rear hooves of the rearing mythical centaur. However, when Christian sailors began to explore southwards in the 16th century, this memorable asterism took on a new significance. The cross appears on the national flags of several southern hemisphere countries, including Australia, though it can be seen on the southern horizon from the tropic of Cancer, 23.5 degrees north of the equator. Along with the Southern Cross is a very distinctive dark shape known as the Coalsack, much used by southern hemisphere astronomers as an indicator of a dark sky, especially if the sixth magnitude star embedded in it is visible. The long axis of the southern cross points towards the south celestial pole, so the cross itself acts as a very convenient circumpolar clock, compasset and calendar
Centre of the Milky Way Central Region - Center of the Milky Way: Central part of the lactee route seen in New Zealand. Planet Saturn is the bright white dot towards the center of the image (near the nebula of the pipe). The central part of our Milky Way photographed from New Zealand. Lots of emission and obscure nebulae are visible in the image. Planet Saturn in the bright white “” star”” close to the center of the image. Collision between the Andromede Galaxy and the Lactee Way - Dead Earth far future - In several billions of years, the Sun will have aneantit all life on Earth. Yet if a life form persists, it will then witness the collision between the Andromede galaxy and our lactee path, creating a wave of star formation in the sky. Bilions of years hence, the sun will swell, warm, and boil away earth's oceans, transforming our once - verdant world into a desiccated wastleand. Whatever intelligent beings might exist then may gaze over the salt flats of extinct seas at a cosmic spectacle, the slow - motion collision between our Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy, which will trigger a wave of star formation

Galactic Center Region - The Galactic Center - The Galactic Center Region of the center of our galaxy seen the Chandra, Spitzer and Hubble satellites. The galactic center (Sagittarius A*) is located in the white area in the middle to the right of the image. In yellow, near-infrared images obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope; in red, infrared images obtained by the Spitzer Space Telescope; in blue and purple, X-ray observations obtained by the Chandra Space Telescope. Nasa's Great Observatories - the Hubble Space Telescope, the Spitzer Space Telescope, and the Chandra X-ray Observatory - have collaborated to produce an unprecedented image of the central region of our Milky Way galaxy. In this spectacular image, observations using infrared light and X-ray light see through the obscuring dust and reveal the intense activity near the galactic core. Note that the center of the galaxy is located within the bright white region to the right of and just below the middle of the image. The entire image width covers about one-half a degree, about the same angular width as the full moon. Each telescope's contribution is presented in a different color: - Yellow represents the near-infrared observations of Hubble. These observations outline the energetic regions where stars are being born as well as reveal hundreds of thousands of stars. - Red represents the infrared observations of Spitzer. The radiation and winds from stars create glowing dust clouds that exhibit complex structures from compact, spherical globules to long, stringy filaments. - Blue and violet represent the X-ray observations of Chandra. X-rays are emitted by gas heated to millions of degrees by stellar explosions and by outflows from the supermassive black hole in the galaxy's center. The bright blue blob on the left side is emission from a double star system containing either a neutron star or a black hole. When these views are brought together, this composite image provides one of the most detailed

Cassiopee Constellation - The constellation of Cassiopeia - Cassiopeia, was seen in mythology as the seated Queen of Ethiopia (not to be confused with the modern AEthiopia). She was the wife of Cepheus and the mother of Andromeda, beautiful but boastful. The grouping of moderately bright stars has a distinctive 'W' shape and lies in a rather faint part of the northern Milky Way. It is circumpolar for latitudes north of 50*. Occupying almost 500 square degrees of sky it is the 25th largest of the 88 modern constellations

Constellations of the Fly and the Southern Cross - Constellations of Musca and the Southern cross - The Southern Cross and the Alpha and Beta Stars of Centaur. Below, the constellation of the Fly. In contrast to adjacent Crux, Musca (The Fly) is a much less obvious, less distinguished and less useful constellation that first appeared in Johann Bayer's 1603 Uranometria. It is one of a dozen created by the Dutch explorers/navigators Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman on their voyages into the south seas in the late 16th century
A diffusing filter was used to enhance star color and general shape of the constellations.
Constellation of Lupus and Norma - Constellation of Lupus and Norma - Also visible are the constellations of the Compas, the Southern Cross, and much of the Centaur. At the top of the picture, the bright spot is the planet Jupiter. Lupus, (the Wolf), was regarded by the Greeks and Romans as an unspecified wild animal, which the Centaur is carrying as a sacrifice the gods. The identification of Lupus as a wolf seems to have been made in relatively recent times. Both Lupus and Norma are in the rich starfields of the southern Milky Way, easily seen between Antares and alpha and beta Centaurii. The brightest object in this image is Jupiter, on the ecliptic at the top of the frame. Norma, (originally Norma and Regula, the builder's level and set square) is an insignificant scattering of stars compared to Lupus and Centaurus. Like the adjacent Circinus (the Drawing Compasses), it was invented by Nicolas de Lacaille, who charted the southern sky from South Africa in 1751 - 2 and felt obliged to fill vacant spaces in the sky with Enlightenment - inspired instruments of science
Lactee route in Sagittarius and Scorpio - Milky way in Sagittarius and Scorpiu
Constellation Scorpio - Milky way and constellation of Scorpius - Scorpius is one of the few constellations whose star pattern resembles its name. The curved stinging tail is marked by the star Shahula, probably from the Arabic 'Al Shaulah' meaning 'raised tail', as seen in a scorpion. In the body of the scorpion lies Antares, meaning 'rival of Mars' for its reddish colour. The head of the scorpion is echoed in the star name Dschubba, meaning 'forehead'. However, the scorpion shape looks trucated in our photograph and it is. In ancient times it extended into what is now Libra, where the brightest stars (not seen here) still carry the resonant names Zeubenelgenubi (a1,2 Lib, the southern claw) and Zeubeneschamali (ss Lib, the northern claw). This celestial scorpion was sent by a jealous Artemis to kill Orion, who still fees the venomous insect: as Scorpius rises Orion sets, and vice - versa. However, he could not be saved even by Asclepius, the god of healing, who was later sent into the heavens as Ophiuchus, the serpent wrestler, a symbol still used by the medical profession. The constellation bestrides one of the richest parts of the southern Milky Way and is adorned by many beautiful stars. It is rich in young stars clusters and the nebulae from which they spring. Some examples are listed below. This image was a long exposure made to show the Milky Way

Constellations of the Telescopium and Sagittarius - The Telescope is a small constellation of the southern hemisphere located just above Sagittarius
Constellation Swan - Cygnus constellation - At the top, the brightest star in the constellation Swan, Deneb. On top of the image is Deneb, the brighest star of the constellation Cygnu
Constellation of Sobieski's ECU - Constellation of Scutum - Scutum (The Shield) was originally Scutum Sobiescianum, Sobieski's Shield, and was introduced in 1690 by the astronomer/cartographer Johannes Hevelius, one - time mayor of Gdansk (Danzig), in honour of Polish warrior - King John Sobieski. King John distiguished himself in defending his land against the Turks in 1683, turning them back at the gates of Vienna. For this he was hailed by the Pope and others as the savior of Vienna and Western European Civilization. Scutum was created in honor of this victory, and alpha Scuti named Ioannina (Greek for John) in his honor. Scutum is small, 84th in size out of the 88 modern constellation. It contains no bright stars, and seems to have been carved out of adjoining Aquila and Serpens simply embrace a fine piece of the Milky Way. However, the open clusters M11 and M26 can be found here
Constellation of Circinus and southern constellations - Constellation of Circinus and southern constellations - The Southern Triangle constellations, the Fly, and the Southern Cross are also visible. Circinus (the drawing Comppass) is an inconspicuous constellation introduced by the French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille, who observed the southern sky from the Cape of Good Hope between 1750 and 1754. He named 14 constellations, many of them associated with science or navigation, such as Microscopium and Telescopium, Octans the Octant and Antlia Pneumatica, the air pump. Circinus contains no bright or named stars and covers 93 square degrees, making it the fourth - smallest. Triangulum Australe is the southern hemisphere counterpart of Triangulum. It is a bigger constellation and contains brighter stars than Triangulum and it never sets for most of Australia. Its brightest star is named Atria (for alpha Trianguli Australis), in the manner of Acrux in the Southern Cross. It is easily seen near a and ss Centaurus. Crux and Musca are also visible in this image
Eagle and Fleche Constellations - Aquila and Sagitta constellations - The brightest star of this constellation is Altair. It is one of the brightest stars in the night sky. It is the center of an almost perfect alignment of three stars and is located about 16 years - light from the Sun. Above the small constellation of the Fleche. Aquila (the Eagle) well represents a mythological bird that was the companion of Jupiter. It lies in the northern Milky Way and contans rich fields of stars particularly in the western half and into adjoining Scutum. The brightest star in the constellation is Altair (Arabic for flying eagle), which is at one corner of the Summer Triangle (Altair, Deneb and Vega). Sagitta (the Arrow) is the third smallest constellation in the sky, and although it contains no bright stars, was well known to the ancient Greeks. Its arrow seems directed through Vulpecula and Pegasus towards Andromeda, skirting Cygnus. These constellations are a little north of the celestial equator and can be seen from all inhabited parts of the planet. Best seen in the early evening in Augus

Constellation Swan - Cygnus constellation - Above, the brightest star in the constellation Swan, Deneb
Constellation of the Altar - Constellations of Ara, Norma and Telescopium - The Altar is a constellation of the southern hemisphere located between the Centaur and the Wolf. Also visible are the constellations of the Rule and the Telescope. Ara (the Altar) is an inconspicuous constellation in the southern sky. It was once considered part of Centaurus and Lupus but became separated when the 'modern' constellation Norma was created by Lacaille in the 1750s. It was recognised by the Greeks and Romans and was visualised as the altar on which the Centaur, Centaurus, was to sacrifice Lupus, the Wolf. This is reflected in its Latin name, Ara Centauri. The constellation is the 63rd largest in the sky and covers about 237 square degrees. The best - known objects in this field are some diffuse dusty nebulae and star clusters. The only named star in Ara is Karnot Mizbeach (ss Ara). Best seen in the early evening in July

Halley Comet - Halley's Comet - Halley's Comet seen in April 1986 in the Scorpio Region. Halliy's Comet on April 10 1986 in the region of the Scorpius Milky Way. The comet is located here just southwest of the Scorpius Jewel Box and IC 4628. Bright star clouds in this region made Halley's tail difficult to distinguish from the background. Antares and the Rho Ophiuchus region is at upper left, and the Milky Way is punctuated by numerous red emission nebula as well as sweeping clouds of obscuring dust
