An asteroid threatens the artist's Earth-View - Asteroid threatening the Earth - Artist vie
Space debris - Artist view - Space debris - Artist view - Approximately 11,000 objects over 10 cm have been identified around the Earth. Most of these debris is in low orbit. The number of debris between 10 cm and 1 cm in diameter, greater than 100,000; particles less than 1 cm must exceed 10 million. Approximately 11,000 objects larger than 10 cm are known to exist around the Earth. The estimated population of particles between 1 and 10 cm in diameter is greater than 100,000. The number of particles smaller than 1 cm probably exceeds tens of millions

Tungouska event -Artist's view-2/3 - Tunguska Valley - Artist view (2/3) - On June 30, 1908 a car, several ten metres in diameter, exploded over the Tounguska region of Siberia. 2000 km of forest and taiga were destroyed, blown by the shock wave of the car. The explosion was heard up to 1500 km. Just after seven in the morning of June 30, 1908 a huge fireball appeared over the region, and detonated as it hit the upper atmosphere. The explosion broke windows over 500 miles away. There were some herdsmen and hunters in the area at the time who were able to provide eyewitness accounts of what became known as the Tunguska Event. Many would later die from what appears to have been radiation exposure
Colliding neutron stars and gravitational waves - Colliding neutron stars and gravitational waves: Artist's view of two colliding neutron stars about to merge and explode in kilonova. This type of event produces gravitational waves and a gamma ray burst. This artist's impression shows two tiny but very dense neutron stars at the point at which they merge and explode as a kilonova. Such a very rare event is expected to produce both gravitational waves and a short gamma-ray burst, both of which were observed on 17 August 2017 by LIGO-Virgo and Fermi/INTEGRAL respectively. Subsequent detailed observations with many ESO telescopes confirmed that this object, seen in the galaxy NGC 4993 about 130 million light-years from the Earth, is indeed a kilonova. Such objects are the main source of very heavy chemical elements, such as gold and platinum, in the Universe
Asteroides threaten the Earth - Artist view - Asteroids threatening the Earth - Artist view - Title: Space Situational Awareness - Near Earth Objects Picture caption: The SSA-NEO system is based on syndicating and federating observation and tracking data provided by a large number of European and international sources. The key components include: -Observatories and astronomers with telescopes of various sizes, both professional and amateur -A central SSA-NEO data centre, the 'Small Bodies Data Centre', which uses astrometric measurements collected by the Minor Planet Center (USA) -An analysis capability to predict possible impact locations and assess dangers -Analyses related to risk mitigation, including the possible deflection of an asteroid -A system for issuing warnings and alerts to civil authorities in Europe Data on NeOS are collected from telescopes and radar systems worldwide. Each of these submit observations to the Minor Planet Center (MPC), operated by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) at Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, which acts as a central clearing house for asteroid and comet observations. The measurements collected there are retrieved by the European Small Bodies Data Centre; orbits and miss distances are computed. In case of high-risk impact predictions, the data will be cross-checked with NASA's SENTRY system, operated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California, before issuing alerts

E.DEORBIT: a satellite to clean up space - E.Deorbit grabbing debris - Artist view of the satellite e.deorbit (right) catching a satellite with a net to take it to consume in the Earth's atmosphere. e.Deorbit is a European mission project that if approved in 2019 will start in 2024. This satellite will be the first to clean up space debris. He would recapture the larger objects with his articulated arm or a net, before discharging them into the atmosphere, or they would be destroyed. ESA's proposed e.Deorbit mission, shown right, using a net to catch a derelict satellite - the baseline capture method for what would be the world's first active space debris removal mission, in 2024. The mission would first rendezvous with a large, drifting ESA satellite, then capture and secure it safely ahead of steering the combination down for a controlled burn-up in the atmosphere. As well as the baselined robot arm, additional capture technologies are being investigated, including a net and harpon. In any case, grappling the derelict satellite would have to be done in a very rapid and precise manner to prevent E.Deorbit and its target rebounding apart. The mission, being developed through ESA's Clean Space initiative - tasked with safeguarding terrestrial and orbital environments - will be proposed for final agreement at ESA's next Council at Ministerial Level, in 2019. It will place European industry at the forefront of the world's active debris removal efforts and multipurpose space tugs
The probes Osiris-Rex and Hayabusa 2 - Artist's view - Osiris-rex and Hayabusa 2 - Artwork: Artist's view of the probe Osiris-Rex near the asteroid Bennu (right) and the probe Hayabusa 2 near the asteroid (162173) Ryugu (upper left). OSIRIS-REX was launched on 8 September 2016 to reach the asteroid Bennu in 2018 and bring a sample back to Earth in 2023. Hayabusa 2 is a space probe of JAXA, the Japanese space agency, launched in December 2014, which will study the asteroid (162173) Ryugu from July 2018 to February 2019 and bring a sample to Earth in December 2020. Osiris-rex will travel to a near-earth asteroid called Bennu and bring a small sample back to Earth for study. It was launched on Sep 8, 2016. As planned, the spacecraft will reach its asteroid target in 2018 and return a sample to Earth in 2023. Hayabusa2 is an asteroid sample return mission operated by the Japanese space agency, JAXA. Mars Express probe - Artist's View - Mars Express artist's view - The European probe Mars Express leaves the Earth propelled by the upper floor Fregat. This probe was launched on 2 June 2003 and began its observations in early 2004. Mars Express left Earth for Mars on 2 June 2003 when the positions of the two planets made for the shortest possible route, a condition that occurs once every twenty - six months. The european spaceprobe began its March observations in 2004. Mars Express was mounted on the Fregat upper stage. Most of the energy needed to propel Mars Express from Earth to Mars is provided by the four - stage Soyuz/Fregat launcher. The Fregat upper stage separated from the spacecraft after placed it on a Mars - bound trajectory
Ice on the Moon - Illustration - Lunar ice - Illustration - Artist's view of ice on the surface of a crater that remains perpetually in the shade of the Sun, near the poles. Water from an encounter with an icy comet has collected in the perpetual shade of a deep crater where the temperature is a constant - 380o F. In 1998, the unmanned Lunar Prospector probe discovered evidence for water ice on the surface of the moon. Some scientists believe that as much as 10 to 300 million tons of ice may reside at the moon's North and South poles. The source of the ice is thought to be from one or more comets that struck the moon's surface four billion years ago. (It is thought that Earth's water may have come from comets as well.) Unfortunately, the moon's small size and lack of an atmosphere caused it to lose almost all of its accumulated water to space. Any water that does remain on the moon would likely be on the poles, hidden in craters and depressions shaded from the Sun
Satellite Planck. Illustration - Artist's view of the European satellite Planck separating from the upper floor of the Ariane V rocket, 30 minutes after its launch. This satellite measures temperature fluctuations in the fossil radiation of the primordial universe. Planck separates from upper stage. Planck separated from the launcher about 30 minutes after launch, a couple of minutes after Herschel. The two spacecraft independently headed towards their respective orbits around the second Lagrange point of the Sun - Earth system (L2), some 1.5 million km from Earth in the direction opposite to the Sun. Planck is the first european mission to study the relic radiation from the Big Bang. Ever since the detection of small fluctuations in the temperature of this radiation, called Cosmic Microwave Background, astronomers have used the fluctuations to understand both the origin of the Universe and the formation of galaxies

100m ocean level rise - Europe - Europe with sea level+100m - Artist's view showing Europe as it would appear if the ocean level increased by 100 metres. This would happen if all glaciers on Earth melt. This is how Europe, North Africa and the Middle East may appear with mean sea level about 100 meters (330 feet) above today's. Such a dramatic rise in sea level could occur if all of the Earth's glaciers were to melt.In this image almost every European country has been flooded with sea water to some extent. Much of the United Kingdom and France have become part of the Atlantic Ocean while Denmark and The Netherlands are completely submerged as are Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The Black Sea has grown to include much of Bulgaria and Ukraine. The Mediterranean Sea now covers parts of Egypt (including all of the Nile delta), Libya and Tunisia and all of western Israel. The Persian Gulf has completely submerged Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and much of Iraq and United Arab Emirates. To the west some of Mauritania and all of Senegal have become part of the Atlantic Ocean

Collision between the Andromede Galaxy and the Lactee Way - Dead Earth far future - In several billions of years, the Sun will have aneantit all life on Earth. Yet if a life form persists, it will then witness the collision between the Andromede galaxy and our lactee path, creating a wave of star formation in the sky. Bilions of years hence, the sun will swell, warm, and boil away earth's oceans, transforming our once - verdant world into a desiccated wastleand. Whatever intelligent beings might exist then may gaze over the salt flats of extinct seas at a cosmic spectacle, the slow - motion collision between our Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy, which will trigger a wave of star formation
Earth seen by satellite DSCOVR - Earth seen by satellite DSCOVR: Earth photo obtained by satellite Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) on July 6, 2015. This satellite, launched on 11 February 2015, and placed in orbit 1.6 million km, at the point of Lagrange L1 (about 4 times farther than the Moon's orbit), provides views of the Earth as a whole - The journey has been a long one for the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR). Once known as Triana, the satellite was conceived in 1998 to provide continuous views of Earth, to monitor the solar wind, and to measure fluctuations in Earth's albedo. The mission was put on hold in 2001, and the part-built satellite ended up in storage for several years with an uncertain future. In 2008, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), NASA, and the U.S. Air Force decided to refurbish and update the spacecraft for launch - On February 11, 2015, DSCOVR was finally lofted into space by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. After journey of about 1.6 million kilometers (1 million miles) to the L1 Lagrange Point, the satellite and its Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) has returned its first view of the entire sunlit side of Earth. At L1-four times farther than the orbit of the Moon - the gravitational pull of the Sun and Earth cancel out, providing a stable orbit and a continuous view of Earth. The image above was made by combining information from Epic's red, green, and blue bands. (Bands are narrow regions of the electromagnetic spectrum to which a remote sensing instrument responds. When EPIC collects data, it takes a series of 10 images at different bands - from ultraviolet to near infrared.)
Satellite Galileo - Artist view - Galileo Satellite - Artist view - Galileo Full Operational Capability (FOC) satellite artist view. The Galileo network of European satellites will consist of 30 satellites at approximately 24,000 km of altitude (27 operationals, 3 reserve). The working nucleus of Galileo, Europe's independent satellite navigation system, is already in place and active. The first satellites in space and a world - spanning ground segment have come together to perform the very first solely European navigation fixes, and validate the design of the Galileo system. To turn Galileo into something that everyone can use freely comes down to expanding its scale: for receivers to fix location a minimum of four satellites must be visible for anywhere on the planet, which means launching many more satellites and expanding Galileo's ground infrastructure. The complete Galileo constellation will consist of 30 satellites along three orbital planes in medium Earth orbit (including two spares per orbit). The result will be Europe's largest ever fleet of satellites, operating in the new environment of medium - Earth orbit

A ring of rocks and dust is orbiting the Earth. The massive continent below is Pangee and the ocean to the west is Panthalassa. This is what Earth was supposed to look like at the end of Permian, about 260 million years ago, before the first dinosaurs appeared. This ring around the Earth was of earthly origin, constitutes debris thrown into orbit by collision with a meteorite or comet. Over time, these debris have fallen or fallen to Earth in a meteorite rain - A dusty ring arc orbits four thousand miles above Earth's equator. The massive continent below is Pangea and the ocean to the west is Panthalassa. This is how the Earth may have appeared during the end of the Permian period, a time just prior to the appearance of the dinosaurs, when continental drift was pulling Pangea apart into the seven continents we know today - 260 million years ago the Earth may have been host to ring arcs similar to the incomplete rings that currently circumscribe the planet Neptune . Unlike Neptune's rings, the ring arcs around the Earth were of terrestrial origin, debris thrown into orbit by a collision with a large meteorite or comet. The debris consisted of tiny pebbles that were once molten droplets of ejecta, long since cooled in the vacuum of space. The orbit of the ring arc would eventually decay, returning the debris back to Earth as a shower of meteorites. This debris is found on Earth's surface today in the form of dark, glassy objects known as tektites.: La Terre à la fin du Permien - Ring arcs over the Permian Earth

Grasberg Mine - Indonesia - Grasberg Mine - Indonesia: The Grasberg Mine is the largest gold mine and the third largest copper mine in the world. It is located in the Indonesian province of Papua in western New Guinea, a few kilometres west of Puncak Jaya, Oceania's highest peak. It is thus located at about 4,000 m above sea level. It consists of an open pit mine and an underground mine. Image taken from the International Space Station (ISS) on 25 June 2005. Located in the Sudirman Mountains of the Irian Jaya province of Indonesia, the Grasberg complex (also known as the Freeport Mine) is one of the largest gold and copper mining operations in the world. This astronaut photograph illustrates the approximately 4-kilometre-wide open-pit portion of the mine complex; there are also extensive underground mine workings. Access roads for trucks hauling ore and waste rock are visible along the sides of the pit. The mine is located in close proximity to rare equatorial mountain glaciers that serve as indicators of climate change in the region. Removal of vegetation, steepening of slopes related to mining activities, earthquakes, and frequent heavy rainfall have resulted in deadly landslides in the mine workings. While landscape reclamation projects have begun at the mine, environmental groups and local citizens are concerned with the potential for copper contamination and acid rock drainage into surrounding river systems, land surfaces, and groundwater. Astronaut photograph was acquired on June 25, 2005 from the International Space Station (ISS)
