Image description

Rev. John Wesley (1703-91), son of a Lincolnshire rector, was from his Oxford days an earnest Christian and an inspiring preacher. His 'Methodism', appealing to many serious Church members, soon developed its own rules and organisation; it was in 1784, the year of this portrait, that Wesley set the Methodist movement on a permanent footing. He had since 1742 journeyed tirelessly around Britain, preaching out of doors when he found churches closed to him. On his 29th visit to sunderland Robert Hawthorn, a leading Methodist, persuaded Wesley to have his portrait painted by local artist John Horsley. In the background is a small vignette of Wesley's chapel on City Road, London, opened in 1778. The original painting passed eventually to the Methodist College in Richmond, Surrey, now closed;
