The central scene depicts the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, whose wrists are tied to a tree, pierced by the arrows of the soldiers surrounding him. The left panel shows Saint Roch standing, wearing his pilgrim's habit. An angel heals a wound on his leg, while a dog holds a piece of bread in its mouth. The right panel depicts Saint Onuphre seated with his long beard and dressed only in branches, with two lions at his feet. These scenes take place in a rocky landscape. On the reverse, each panel features full-length figures of Saints Peter and Stephen, with their attributes, in grisaille. Van Hemessen's invention lies in the continuous landscape over the three panels, which gives the illusion of a single scene, whereas each subject is independent.The choice of saints depicted is coherent, in the sense that they are all invoked during major epidemics, notably the plague.
