On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "No. 1 on R was then the 'Record Office' - early on a private house, later Police Station, Town Commissioners, rebuilt in present form, still Commissioners, & lastly Customs. That it was the Record Office in 1833 is certain, but probably the original private house used as such. I doubt if there is a better view of this bit of the old town in existence - if any as good. Note the cobbles and the clerestory panes of the Church. 'The Continental aspect', as the Illust. Lond. News phrased it."
