Description
Table des Grands Capitaines; commissioned by Napoleon; given to George IV when Prince Regent by Louis XVIII of France; painted porcelain sections by Sevres artists Louis-Bertin Parant (fl.1806-41) and Antoine Beranger (fl.1808-48); gilt bronze mounts by Pierre-Philippe Thomire; top painted in imitation sardonyx with portrait of Alexander the Great (356-23 BC); roundels depict commanders and philosophers of antiquity, from top right: Pericles, Scipio Africanus, Pompey, Augustus, Septimius Severus, Constantine, Trajan, Caesar, Mithridates, Hannibal, Themistocles and Militiades; table became part of the ceremonial backdrop in state portraits of George IV;
