Élisabeth Louise Vigée-Lebrun (b. 1755 d. 1842) was a French painter who is most notable for her portraits of women. She rose to prominence in 1779 when she was commissioned to paint a portrait of Queen Marie - Antoinette. The two women became close friends and Vigée-Lebrun painted more than 20 portraits of the Queen. She was one of the most successful portraitists of her time and was one of only four women admitted to the Académie Royale during the 18th century.
