Sewn by English women probably in Kent to a Norman brief, the embroidery illustrates the events leading to the Norman invasion and conquest of England by an army led by Duke William of Normandy and the death of King Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex, instructed by Edward the Confessor (c. 1003-66), King of England, to go to Normandy, rides to Bosham church with his men to pray for a safe voyage.
