Image description

British (English) School. Oil painting on canvas, Elizabeth Houghton, Lady Bedingfeld (d.1662) by British (English) School, inscribed, below right, reads 'Elizabeth 2nd wife of Sir Henry Bedingfeld, daughter of Peter Houghton, Houghton Tower, obit 1662'. Since the subject was widowed in 1657 by the death of her husband Sir Henry Bedingfeld,'The Cavalier', this portrait may be dated 1657-1662. A painted oval half-length portrait of an elderly lady, daughter of Peter Houghton of Houghton , Lancshire and sesond wife of Sir Henry Bedingfeld, seated, turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator. Dressed in widow's weeds consisting of a black dress over a white underdress with full sleeves which are tied at the elbow with black bows, she also wears a white cape-like collar which is tied with three black bows to the chin. On her head she wears a widow's peaked cap under a black gauze veil which falls over her shoulders. The figure, mother of the first baronet, is set within a painted trompe l'oeil, oval frame.
