Since 1930, The Mariners’ Museum has been collecting and displaying humankind's shared history with the seas of the world. The Museum was founded by Archer Milton Huntington and Homer L. Ferguson in Newport News, Virginia. The collection began taking form in the early 1930s with artefacts being purchased along the East Coast of the United States. Through the 1930s, international artefacts were acquired, creating an all-encompassing world-class collection.

Sitting within a 550-acre park, The Mariners’ Museum and Park includes Mariners’ Lake as well as over five miles of hiking trails. The Museum itself contains 90,000 square feet of exhibition galleries and a state-of-the-art conservation lab. The collection has greatly expanded over the last 91 years. It currently holds over 32,000 objects, which includes 2-D art and 3-D objects. Additionally, its comprehensive library houses roughly 110,000 books, with the foundation of the Library largely made up of Huntington’s personal collection of maritime books. The archive contains over 800,000 photographs, films, and negatives as well as over 1 million additional artefacts.
