Image description

sheet music cover for 'Quadrilles for the Piano Forte', Composed and Respectfully Dedicated to Edmund Chambers Esqr. of Radway, by W. Henry Wilkes. Sheet music cover showing view of Wolverton Viaduct on the London and Birmingham Railway Published by Charles Ollivier, Music & Musical Instrument Seller, 41, New Bond Street, “where may be had Perry's Lochlomond Quadrilles”. C. F. Cheffins lithographer, 9 Southampton Buildings, Holborn, London. Ollivier advertised in The Morning Post 14 January 1840 that he could supply everything required for a “Quadrille Party”. By July 1854 he was Secretary of St George’s Hall, Bradford and in 1861 was Secretary to the Tradesmen’s Benevolent Institution, Bradford. In 1865 St. George's Hall gave a concert in his honour “Mr Charles Ollivier First and Farewell Full Dress Concert for his benefit” Charles Frederick Cheffins (1807-1861) was a British mechanical draughtsman, cartographer, consulting engineer, and surveyor, known for his drawings of locomotive engines, cartographic work, and as a surveyor for numerous railroad projects. He was an assistant to John Ericsson and George Stephenson, and surveyed for many British railroad companies in the mid-19th century. Cheffins prepared many of the designs for the construction of the bridges on the London and Birmingham Railway and from 1830, Cheffins started making lithographs, which were published in magazines. Wolverton Viaduct is a railway bridge carrying the West Coast Main Line over the River Great Ouse to the north of Wolverton, part of the City of Milton Keynes. Built under the supervision of Robert Stephenson in 1837 for the London and Birmingham Railway, it is one of the largest and most notable structures on the route and is a grade II listed building.
