Image description

Painting. Giovanni Antonio Canal, called Canaletto. London, a view of Northumberland House, looking eastward. The house is shown with the facade as reconstructed early in 1752. The house occupies the centre background, twelve windows each side of the gatehouse which is surmounted by a lion (now at Syon House). Brick houses continue the line, on the right, the equestrian statue of Charles I before them. On the left of the house brick and stucco houses receding up the Strand. In right corner a table and utensils, a woman seated, a boy running to her. A wheel lies in the road, and a girl with back turned stands on the kerb facing a coachman in scarlet. Near centre in the road a man holding a tub, a man with a rope and a two-wheeled cart, a man keeling by a the shaft. Near the front a man and woman followed by a little dog are walking away, between two short white posts. Towards left corner a humpback, two men arem in arm, a man with turned back and the back view of a coach. Across the street, on extreme left, two white awnings over shop windows, next an inn with sign of a golden cock, next a house with two golden crosses and an inscription, next a sign with a black goose or crow. Two coaches stand in the shadow, on the corner, a pair of coaches stand on the other side of the street, facing east. A date of 1752-3 is supported by an engraving published in 1753. Engraved: By Thomas Bowles, printed in 1753 for Robert Sayer, and inscribed In the Collection of the Earl of Northumberland. Reproduced: Country Life, 8 December 1928. Oil on canvas. 33ins. by 54ins. Provenance: Probably painted for Sir Hugh Smithson, Bt., later 1st Duke of Northumberland.
