Image description

Walking stick dedicated to Major-General William Alfred Dimoline, CBE MC, 5th King’s African Rifles, 1945. This polished redwood staff has a carved head in the form of a soldier of the 5th (Kenya) Battalion, The King’s African Rifles, standing at ease in tropical kit and bush hat. The staff flares out to form a plinth for him to stand on and below this is a silver plaque inscribed with the dedication to Major General William Alfred Dimoline, CBE MC, from the 5th King’s African Rifles, one of the units he commanded during the war. Dimoline commanded the 26th East African Brigade (of 12th African Division) in Italian Somaliland and Ethiopia during the East African Campaign. During the Battle of Madagascar in 1942, he commanded the 22nd East African Brigade. His brigade carried out an amphibious landing on 10 September at Majunga, in the north-west part of the island. Later, he commanded a number of East African brigades in Burma, and then, on promotion to major-general in 1945, the 11th (East Africa) Division.
