Watching the boat race from pleasure boats at the sides of the River Thames is a traditional part of Henley Regatta. The Regatta takes place in July, and was a very popular society event in the late-19th century. The informality of the viewpoint on the top of a pleasure barge has similarities with boating scenes by French Impressionist artists. By cutting off the boat in the foreground, the artist was able to give the picture a snapshot, real-life quality;
