'Civitates Orbis Terrarum' by Georg Braun (1541-1622) and Frans Hogenberg (1535-90) Portuguese port detail from Map of Calicut. An enclosed village (pagus) beside the castle of São Jorge da Mina (Guinea, modern Ghana). The fort of St George was built in 1482 on the orders of King John II of Portugal to protect the first European gold trading post on Africa's Gold Coast. The village was called Mina after the mine.
