Wilhelm Bendz probably heard about this patient with a tumour on his knee from his brother, a surgeon at the Frederiks Hospital of Bredgade in Copenhagen. This painting goes to show how artists sometimes created works very close to scientific or medical illustrations, sometimes down to the least appealing detail.
