Aretha Campbell, Senior Artist Manager

Aretha Campbell, Bridgeman Artists' Manager
Aretha Campbell, Bridgeman Artists' Manager

What's your role at Bridgeman Images?

I'm responsible for managing the incredible collection of artists within the Bridgeman Images archive. They include well-known artists and new emerging young creators.

What do you love most about your job?

The opportunity to work with everyone from the Lucian Freud Estate to the Keeper of the Royal Academy.

What misconceptions do people most commonly have about the archive?

Not realising how diverse the archive is. We work with museums, auction houses, galleries, photographers, individual artists and estates from around the globe.

Aretha's top picks from our archive

The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters

I love Goya's work and wrote my dissertation at university on his Black Paintings. This is my favourite etching from the series Los Caprichos. It has come to symbolise the overall meaning of the series: what happens when reason is absent.

Various animals including bats and owls fly above the sleeping artist. At the lower right a lynx vigilantly watches. It alerts us to the rise of monstrous forces that we can control when sleep descends.

Paper Doll

Often described as a magic realist, Eileen Cooper is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work regularly references relationships, love and allegory. I placed this particular painting in an exhibition I curated. I love the movement in the composition and the somewhat sinister undertones.

Eileen has joined Bridgeman Images as one of our copyright artists. Limited editions of her work are available through Bridgeman.

David Hockney

I love how Reeve has captured the casualness of the young Hockney characteristically smoking a cigarette in his studio. It perfectly encapsulates the moment in time.

Clip: Discussion with Lucian Freud in his studio

Lucian Freud is one of the most celebrated and important artists in Britain. This is a fantastic clip of him.

Holly Frean, A Pack of Picasso's Women

Holly Frean is one of my favourite Bridgeman Studio artists. Her works on paper are always in multiples. This one is a particularly humorous example. Following her acclaimed exhibition at Paul Smith, Holly also produced a limited edition print for Bridgeman.
