A head-and-shoulders portrait of a man, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, short dark hair with lighter brown pointed beard and whiskers, wearing dark suit of armour, ruff and orange sash; dark background. It is conceivable that the picture was painted in the Netherlands, by a Dutch artist closer to Mierevelt, rather than England as the orange sash would suggests that Sir William maybe fought in the Low Countries.
