A Transformative Process

Our inhouse scanning team ensures that every image is picture perfect

Dave Nicol, Digital image technician at Bridgeman Images

Digital image technician Dave Nicol has been with Bridgeman Images for over 10 years and oversees the scanning department. At Bridgeman we are in a unique position of holding transparencies as well as high resolution files and thus able to go back to the original photography.

Two ICG colour drum scanners quickly produce the highest quality scans of all types of transparencies and on a daily basis Dave will be recreating images into digital files, taking great care to ensure they are as close as possible to the original.

Retouching images is an ongoing project as museums have their paintings restored.  See examples of before and after the restoration/retouching process.

Details are also available upon request as well as colouration for some black and white images.

Quality Control: Working with Artist's Estates

The scanning team has built up reciprocal relationships with key artists’ estates, including those of Picasso and Matisse.

This enables expert quality advice on inaccessible artworks during tight deadlines. Visits to exhibitions with image proofs in hand also help the team compare digital files directly with the original works of art.
