Harper's Bazaar teamed up with Misty Copeland to create this stunning homage to Edward Degas using an image licensed by Bridgeman.
Back in February of this year, one of the United States' most famed ballet dancers Misty Copeland did an interview with the magazine Harper's Bazaar. In the article, Copeland discusses her relationship with ballet (past, present, and future) as well as discussing the comparisons between the true life of a ballet dancer versus the life depicted in Edgar Degas’ world-renowned ballet-centric works.
Copeland appears as if she has stepped right out from a Degas drawing as recreates several of his masterpieces in photographs throughout the article. The photographs even replicate the costumes almost perfectly. In each photo, Copeland is able to capture the poise and the ethereal beauty that we associate with ballet dancers.
Many of the Degas pieces the photographer recreates can be found within the Bridgeman archive (specifically 'The Star', or 'Dancer on the Stage' from 1877). While Misty Copeland celebrates her recent marriage to longtime partner, Olu Evans, Degas’ work can be seen at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in the show 'Degas: A New Vision' (October 16, 2016 - January 8, 2017). The MFAH will be the only US establishment hosting this exhibition, and is also one of Bridgeman’s represented collections.
