Yoko Honda

We are delighted that Bridgeman Studio now represent Japanese illustrator Yoko Honda for image licensing. Yoko was one of our winners of the CultureLabel.com prize in the Bridgeman Studio Award 2015 competition and received a limited edition product line featuring her exceptional artwork.

Her prints have achieved tremendous popularity thanks to her nostalgic 80s aesthetic and her ability to capture the the beauty and glamour of the summer season. Think vibrant, neon colors and geometrical designs of scenes by the poolside or of a blazing hot Miami.

What is your earliest memory of an artwork and who was it by?

My earliest memory of an artwork, is actually a video. When I was 10 years old, I saw Michael Jackson’s video for ‘Leave Me Alone’ and this has stuck with me.

Talk us through a day in the life of Yoko Honda - What does a day in your life look like?

I get up at 11am and get ready to work. At this time I begin answering emails and drawing pictures simultaneously. I have a meal at 4pm and begin working again between 5 and 6pm. I have supper at 9pm and then draw again until 5am.

How would you sum up your practice in 5 words?

Flash, Concentrate, Repeat, Consideration, Delicate

What or who are your most significant visual influences?

My singular most significant visual influence is the late animator, Robert Abel. I am also hugely inspired by Ken Done, David Hockney and Patrick Nagel... But Robert Abel is my favourite.

How do you like to unwind?

Most recently, I’ve been enjoying watching classic drama – I find it so relaxing. My other favorite activity at the moment is to have my husband massage my back whilst talking with him about our next holiday!

What has been your most favorite commission to date?

My favorite commission was one I completed just a month and a half ago. It hasn’t been released and so I can’t share the details just yet. It’s a clothing project for a well-known denim clothing brand. It’s for their SS17 line.

What would you most like to see your images used for?

I would love to see my images used for a music video (I have never done it!).

If you could pick 5 artists, dead or alive, to have dinner with who would they be?

My ideal dinner partners would be Michael Jackson, Prince, Alfred Hitchcock, Robert Abel and Walt Disney.
