Now representing the British Council Collection, one of the most comprehensive holdings of 20th and 21st century British art
The British Council Collection is one of the most comprehensive holdings of modern and contemporary British art in the world, containing more than 8500 art works by over 1650 British artists.
Diana Eccles, Head of Collections, said "The British Council's Collection has a rich, fascinating history which we are delighted to be able to preserve and promote through our partnership with the Bridgeman. We hope this collaboration will bring the story of the collection and of British Art, to new audiences worldwide".

Many of the works in the collection are from artists at the start of their careers, acquired in response to requests to see what is new and emerging in Britain, and as a result the collection holds a number of extraordinary works from the mid-20th Century by Lucian Freud, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson amongst others. Artists in their Studios The vast and varied collection includes Bruce Bernard’s arresting photography of Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud in their studios, beautiful ceramics by Robert Dawson and both old and new work by Pop artist Peter Blake; including his London prints and collages of the city.

Creative Techniques
Artists in the collection display a huge range of creative techniques; from painting and photography to graphics, ceramics, installation, textiles and new media. The collection also houses some of the most radical early 20th century modern British sculpture. By artists including Lynn Chadwick, Antony Caro and Kennith Armitage. |

The collection is also rich in graphic art covering the last 100 years, including important works by Gerald Brockhurst, Frank Short and James McBey; and a great selection of works from the 1960s by artists such as Derek Boshier, Patrick Caulfield, David Hockney, Colin Self and Joe Tilson. These modern and contemporary artworks are interspersed with early 20th century transport posters from the Alan Mabey Collection.
