Bridgeman Images is delighted to announce its representation of The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, making its incredible archive available for licensing globally.
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is one of the biggest and most renowned museums in the United States. It stands as the cultural epicentre of the Bay area with an extensive collection of both international and national artists. The museum’s mission is to “engage and inspire a diverse range of audiences by pursuing an innovative program of exhibitions, education, publications and collection activities”, while it also believes that art is meant to be shared and experienced by everyone and that it can revolutionize the world as it opens people’s perspectives about society.
In 2013, the museum closed its doors for renovation and opened up again in 2016 with a newly designed building by an international architect, Snohetta. The new building is a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) gold-certified building, which categorizes a building as green, and it offers seven floors of gallery space as well as 45,000 square feet of free public space for outdoor exhibitions. The beautiful uneven white façade was purposefully done to emphasize the watery and foggy climate of the Bay area, while the windows throughout the building give visitors unique views of the San Francisco skyline.
Since its opening in 1935, the SFMOMA, has carried an impressive array of works in its permanent collection, including paintings, sculptures, works on paper and photographs. Today, the museum holds more than 8,000 works dating back to 1900 until today, by artists such as George Braque, Georgia O’Keeffe, Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo or Eva Hesse. In addition, instead of keeping the permanent collection hidden from the public, the museum encourages people to engage with it in their Collections Center, located in South San Francisco.
The Collections Center houses those works that aren’t currently on public display as well as research, conservation and photo studio facilities. Because the museum gives high importance and emphasis on education, the museum works closely with teachers and professors from schools around the area, so students can more visually and physically engage with artworks for research and educational purposes.
The SFMOMA offers various resources for local Northern California artists, however, their most famous project is the SFMOMA Artist Gallery, a nonprofit gallery that promotes local artists with exhibitions and workshops. The museum acknowledges its power and fame and understands that it can be a great asset for emerging artists around the area. By promoting local artists, the museum is directly giving back to the community and creating a great opportunity to foster the culture of San Francisco.
At Bridgeman, we admire and appreciate all the work the SFMOMA does for their community and the art world, while we believe their values and beliefs match those from Bridgeman. As we continue to advance and increase our supplier services, adding museums such as the SFMOMA, will greatly benefit the work that we do at Bridgeman as well as our clients’ projects.
