Founded in the late 19th century by architect William Rutherford Mead (1846-1928), the Mead is considered a must-see attraction for art in Western Massachusetts.
 
Boasting an extensive collection that ranges from ancient Assyrian carvings to Russian avant-garde art, American and European paintings to West African sculpture, it is an inspiring educational and cultural resource for both Amherst students and visiting members of the public. The Mead owns works by some of art history’s most celebrated artists, including:

- Portrait painters Joshua Reynolds and John Singer Sargent

Well-known for its extensive collection of paintings by American artists, the Mead showcases rolling landscapes as well as portraits of key figures American history, including presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln

Tibetan Textiles
 
Among the Mead’s wealth of antiques is a large collection of 18th - 19th century Tibetan textiles known as Thangaka: colourful cloth hangings, often on wooden dowels for mounting. Many depict specific deities, such as the Buddha or a Bodhisattva, while others composed of an assemblage of different divinities against a tranquil landscaped background. 
 
 
 
 
 
Japanese Prints
 
From 18th century woodblock prints to 20th century silkscreen, scenes of daily life to sensual shunga, the nearing 900 Japanese prints at the Mead will that will transport you not only to another era, but another world.

Mexican Furniture
 
From glazed tiles and platters to dowry chests and writing desks, daily life in 18th - 20th century Mexico is depicted in a whirlwind of delicately-glazed earthenware, colorful lacquered wood, and exotic materials such as ivory and glass.
 
 
 
 
 
 
Modern Russian Art
 
The Mead’s collection of early 20th century Russian art is constantly growing. Highlights include Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall and eerie prints by Oleg Vladimirovich Vassiliev (right).
