from 13-16th July 1863 riots began protesting the Enrollment Act passed by President Abraham Lincoln (1809-65) forcing conscription in the Civil War; mostly poor Irish Americans who rioted because more wealthy men could pay a 'commutation fee' to avoid service; eventually the mob targeted blacks resulting in Federal Troops being called in; the New York Tribune was a well known abolitionist newspaper edited by Horace Greeley (1811-72);
