Image description: Henri tenant le premier chapitre du saint esprit; L'Ordre du Saint-Esprit; In 1578, Henry created the Order of the Holy Spirit to commemorate his becoming first King of Poland and later King of France on the day of the Feast of Pentecost and gave it precedence over the earlier Order of St. Michael. Louis Gonzaga, Duc de Nevers was the first to receive the order; members of the order had to be Roman Catholic and had to demonstrate three degrees of nobility; symbol was a Maltese Cross; Due to the blue riband from which the Cross of the Holy Spirit was hung, the Knights became known as "Les Cordon Bleus". 8 ecclesiatic members; 4 officers; 100 knights
