Image description

Illustration depicting the Tower Subway The Tower Subway is a tunnel beneath the River Thames between Tower Hill on the north and Vine Lane on the south. It was constructed in 1869 and from 1870 conveyed passengers from one end to the other in a wooden carriage. This soon proved uneconomic and the tunnel was converted to pedestrian use. 20,000 people a week crossed under the river, paying a half penny toll. When the toll-free Tower Bridge opened in 1894 the Tower Subway closed and was sold to the London Hydraulic Power Company. Today, the tunnel is used for water mains From 'Old and New London: A Narrative of its History, its People and its Places', Vol II by Walter Thornbury, 1872-8 Engraver: Frank Watkins (1834-97)
