Dado of Mermen, Putti, Seahorses, and Sea Monsters

Oil painting on canvas (grisaille), Dado of Mermen, Putti, Seahorses, and Sea Monsters, after Raphael, 19th century. 1: a merman, riding the waves, centre, turned to right, back to spectator, a wreath of leaves around his waist; holding a conch shell in his right hand, and a fish in his left, with which he is about to strike a ram-headed sea-monster. To the left, a satyr steps onto the tail of the fish-serpent; 2: a merman, riding the waves, centre, holding a weapon, both arms raised above the head, ready to strike a sea-monster, left; a naked youth behind; 3: a merman, riding the waves, centre, with a fish-serpent tail on which a naked youth rides, and a sea serpent with the head of a dragon, the body of a serpent, the front legs of a horse and the wings of a swan; 4: a merman, riding the waves, back to spectator, looking upwards, with curly hair and full beard, he holds a large conch shell in his right hand; 5: a hippocamp, turned to right, riding the waves, with the tail of a serpent, carrying a naked putto on its back, in whose right hand he holds a swirling drape which forms an arc above himself and the horse; 6: a naked putto standing on the waves, holds aloft, in his left hand, a dead sea-serpent; 7: a winged sea-creature with the head of a dragon, rears up on the left, in front of a merman holding a club, ready to strike the sea-creature, a nereid sits on the merman's neck; 8: centre, riding the waves is a dragon-headed sea creature, to the left, a merman holding a club in his right hand, raised above his head, and to the right another merman holding one of the horns of the sea-creature in his right hand.
