Antar ibn al-Chaddad, poet and warrior, 19th century (painting)

Antar ibn al-Chaddad (Antara ibn al Chaddad, Shaddad or Shadded), son of an Arab emir and a black slave, legendary pre-Islamic Arab figure of the sixth century who is believed to have lived from 525 to 615 AD - Antar, poet and warrior, is most often depicted riding a black horse and brandishing a spear or sword. Undated painting (probably 19th century, folk art from the Maghreb or Egypt) - Excerpt from the “Roman of Antar”: “He is a black knight. The horse used as his mount seems to have been cut from a block of black marble.
