An Unknown Woman, called Margaret Godman, Mrs John William Watson (d.1922) A half-length portrait of a woman, seated and turned slightly to the left, facing the viewer, wearing a dark dress with a white lace collar, a white lace bonnet, and a fur stole. The sitter in this portrait has been identified as Margaret Godman, the wife of John William Watson (1827-1909), and the mother of the second owner of Cragside, William Watson-Armstrong (1863-1941). However, the style of the portrait suggests that it was painted around 1840-50, and the woman looks as though she is in her middle age, making her a member of an earlier generation than Margaret Godman.
