Battle of Sluys. The great battle fought in 1340. Our picture shows the English boarding the Christopher, an English ship which the French had recently captured. The effigy is of Sir Oliver Ingham who, in 1340, drove the French from Bordeaux, The pebbles indicate that he was a brave warrior, not a country gentleman. The image in the bottom right is of Sir Geoffrey Lutterell being seen off to the wars by his wife and daughter. Original artwork for illustration on p21 of Look and Learn issue no 493 (26 June 1971). Lent to Look and Learn for scanning by The Gallery of Illustration.
