Star HD 189733 and nebula planetary Dumbbell (M27) - A star field with HD 189733 and Dumbell nebula - Image centree on the star HD 189733 located 63 years ago - light in the constellation Petite Fox. Astronomers discovered around this star an exoplanet (HD 189733b). This gas planet a little bigger than Jupiter is very close to its star; this type of planet is called hot Jupiter. We detected the presence of mists in his atmosphere. To the right of this star is the planetary nebula Dumbbell (M27) located about 1400 years from Earth. A planetary nebula is a gas shell from a small late-life star whose heart collapsed to become a white dwarf and expelled the outer layers of its matter. A star field image showing the star HD 189733 (centre) with Dumbell nebula. Orbiting close to its parent star, is an extrasolar planet, HD 189733b, a 'hot - Jupiter' type of gas giant slightly larger than Jupiter. The observations provide clear evidence of the presence of hazes in its atmosphere. To the right of the star is the notable planetary nebula Messier 27. The Dumbbell Nebula (M27, NGC6853), is a planetary nebula located about 1400 light years from the earth in the constellation of Vulpecula. The nebula was formed when an evolved, red giant star ejected its outer envelope near the end of its lifetime
ATV - End of mission - Artist view - ATV burn up - Artist view - Artist view of the European automatic cargo ATV entering the Earth's atmosphere. Designed to supply the international space station with various equipment, the ATV, with several tons of fuel on board, will be used to bring the station back into its orbit. At the end of the mission, he will automatically return to Earth or burn in his atmosphere. In combination with ESA's new Ariane 5, the 20.5 t, 8.5 m - long Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) will enable Europe to transport cargo to the International Space Station. It can remain docked for up to 6 months, during which time it will be loaded with Station waste before being undocked and flown into Earth's atmosphere to burn up
Voyager 2 probe near Neptune and Triton - The Voyager 2 probe orbited around Neptune in August 1989. Artist View
Pioneer Plate - The Pioneer Plate - The Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 probes have embarked on a plate, called the Pioneer Plate, containing a message intended for potential aliens. On this engraved metal plate are depicted a naked man and woman, the location of our Sun as well as 14 pulsars, the trajectory of the probe in the solar system... Pioneer 10 was launched on 3 March 1972 with as its first destination, the Jupiter Planet, which it flew over on 3 December 1973; it was the first space probe to approach this planet; it was also the first space probe to leave the solar system. The Pioneer F spacecraft, destined to be the first man made object to escape from the solar system into interstellar space, carries this pictorial plaque. It is designed to show scientifically educated inhabitants of some other star system, who might intercept it millions of years from now, when Pioneer was launched, from where, and by what kind of beings. The design is etched into a 6 inch by 9 inch gold - anodized aluminum plate, attached to the spacecraft's attenna support struts in a position to help shield it from erosion by interstellar dust. The radiating lines at left represents the positions of 14 pulsars, a cosmic source of radio energy, arranged to indicate our sun as the home star of our civilization. The “” 1 - “” symbols at the ends of the lines are binary numbers that represent the frequencies of these pulsars at the time of launch of Pioneer F relative of that to the hydrogen atom shown at the upper left with a “” 1”” unity symbol. The hydrogen atom is thus used as a “” universal clock,”” and the regular decrease in the frequencies of the pulsars will enable another civilization to determine the time that has elapsed since Pioneer F was launched. The hydrogen is also used as a “” universal yardstick”” for sizing the human figures and outline of the spacecraft shown on the right. The hydrogen wavelength, about 8 inches, multiplied by

Remains of the Crab Supernova (M1) in the Taurus - The Crab nebula, wide field - M1, the Crab nebula, is the rest of a supernova that exploded in 1054. It is located about 7000 light years from Earth in the constellation Taurus. At the heart of this nebula is a pulsar, a very dense neutron star resulting from the explosion of a massive supernova star. The bright star at the bottom right is Zeta Tauri. In the year 1054 AD a star in the constellation of Taurus exploded in a spectacular supernova so bright it appeared to dominate the sky except for the Sun and Moon for many days even in daylight. What we see now top left is the supernova remnant: a brilliant nebula, the first in the famous list compiled by Charles Messier. The nebula houses a spinning neutron star called a pulsar. The brilliant blue star bottom right is the 3rd magnitude Zeta Tauri

Detail of the horse's head nebula by the VLT - Horsehead Nebula, which is situated in the Orion molecular cloud complex. Its official name is Barnard 33 and it is a dust protrusion in the southern region of the dense dust cloud Lynds 1630, on the edge of the HII region IC 434. The distance to the region is about 1400 light - years (430 pc). This beautiful colour image was produced from three images obtained with the multi - mode FORS2 instrument at the second VLT Unit Telescope (KUEYEN) on February 1, 2000. Three predominant colours are seen in the image: red from the hydrogen (H - alpha) emission from the HII region; brown for the foreground obscuring dust; and blue - green for scattered starlight. The blue - green regions of the Horsehead Nebula correspond to regions not shadowed from the light from the stars in the H II region to the top of the picture and scatter stellar radiation towards the observer; these are thus 'mountains' of dust
Saturn rings 30/06/2004 by Cassini in ultraviolet - Image in false colors made by the Cassini probe on 30 June 2004. The different colors correspond to differences in the chemical composition of the particles that make up the rings. The ring system is composed from the closest to Saturn to the outermost by ring D, then C, B, the division of Cassini, A with the division of Encke, F, G and E. Here are the variations in the composition of rings A - B and C that are watched. Encke's division is the outer red line. Turquoise blue corresponds to particles composed of pure ice, in red the dirty and finer ice particles.

Mars: Noctis Labyrinthus - Mars: Noctis Labyrinthus - Perspective view of Noctis Labyrinthus, located in the western part of the great Martian canyon Valles Marineris. This heavily eroded canyon is here 5000 meters deep. Image obtained by the Mars Express probe on June 25, 2006. On 25 June 2006 the High - Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC), onboard the ESA spacecraft Mars Express obtained image data with a ground resolution of approximately 16 meters per pixel. The data were acquired in the region of Noctis Labyrinthus at approximately 6.5* southern latitude and 260* eastern longitude. The region Noctis Labyrinthus, the Labyrinth of the Night”” is located directly on the western edge of Valles Marineris, the “Grand Canyon of Mars””. It is part of the complex graben system which is associated with the up - arching of Tharsis. Eye - catching is the high density of deeply incised, smaller, maze - like fractures. The scene exhibits parts of those graben structures which are incised up to 5000 meters. They are strongly eroded as can be seen at the bottom of the graben which exhibits detritus. Younger lithologies can be seen on the upper edge of the graben. The fractures are witnesses of so - called extensional tectonics. The intense volcanism in the Tharsis region was associated with an intense up - arching of large areas. This process resulted in tectonic stress, causing the crust to thin out and lead to graben formation.

Detail of the nebula Omega (M17) by HST - This Hubble photograph captures a small region within Messier 17 (M17), a hotbed of star formation. M17, also known as the Omega or Swan Nebula, is located about 5500 light - years away in the Sagittarius constellation. The wave - like patterns of gas have been sculpted and illuminated by a torrent of ultraviolet radiation from young, massive stars (which lie outside the picture to the upper left). The glow of these patterns highlights the 3D structure of the gases. The ultraviolet radiation is carving and heating the surfaces of cold hydrogen gas clouds. The image, roughly 3 light - years across, was taken on 29 - 30 May 1999, with Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2. The colours in the image represent various gases. Red represents sulphur; green, hydrogen; and blue, oxygen

Planetary nebula NGC 6543 in the Dragon/HST - This NASA Hubble Space Telescope image shows one of the most complex planetary nebulae ever seen, NGC 6543, nicknamed the “Cat's Eye Nebula.””” Hubble reveals surprisingly intricate structures including concentric gas shells, jets of high - speed gas and unusual shock - induced knots of gas. Estimated to be 1,000 years old, the nebula is a visual “” fossil record”” of the dynamics and late evolution of a dying star. A preliminary interpretation suggests that the star might be a double - star system. The dynamical effects of two stars orbiting one another most easily explains the intricate structures, which are much more complicated than features seen in most planetary nebulae. (The two stars are too close together to be individually resolved by Hubble, and instead, appear as a single point of light at the center of the nebula.) According to this model, a fast “” stellar wind””” of gas blown off the central star created the elongated shell of dense, glowing gas. This structure is embedded inside two larger lobes of gas blown off the star at an earlier phase. These lobes are “” pinched”” by a ring of denser gas, presumably ejected along the orbital plane of the binary companion. The suspected companion star also might be responsible for a pair of high - speed jets of gas that lie at right angles to this equatorial ring. If the companion were pulling in material from a neighboring star, jets escaping along the company's rotation axis could be produced. These jets would explain several puzzling features along the periphery of the gas lobes. Like a stream of water hitting a sand pile, the jets compress gas ahead of them, creating the “” curlicue”” features and bright arcs near the outer edge of the lobes. The twin jets are now pointing in different directions than these features. This suggests the jets are wobbling, or precessing, and turning on and off episodically. This color picture, taken with the Wide Field Planetary Camera - 2
Remnants of the supernova Cassiopee A in X-rays - visible and infrared - This stunning picture of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (Cas A) is a composite of images taken by three of Nasa's Great Observatories. Infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope are colored red; optical data from the Hubble Space Telescope are yellow; and X - ray data from the Chandra X - ray Observatory are green and blue. Cas A is the 300 - year - old remnant created by the supernova explosion of a massive star. Each Great Observatory image highlights different characteristics of the remnant. Spitzer reveals warm dust in the outer shell with temperatures of about 10 degrees Celsius (80 degrees Fahrenheit), and Hubble sees the delicate filamentary structures of warmer gases about 10,000 degrees Celsius. Chandra shows hot gases at about 10 million degrees Celsius. This hot gas was created when ejected material from the supernova smashed into surrounding gas and dust at speeds of about ten million miles per hour. A comparison of the infrared and X - ray images of Cas A should enable astronomers to better understand how relatively cool dust grains can coexist in the superhot gas that produces the X - rays. It should also help to determine whether most of the dust in the supernova remnant came from the massive star before it exploded, or from the rapidly expanding supernova ejecta. The turquoise dot at the center of the shell may be a neutron star created during the supernova. Blue Chandra data were acquired using broadband X - rays (low through high energies); green Chandra data correspond only to intermediate energy X - rays; yellow Hubble data were taken using a 900 nanometer - wavelength filter, and red Spitzer data are from the telescope's 24 - micron detector. Observation Dates 9 pointings between Feb 8 - May 5, 2004 Observation Time 11 days, 14 hours Distance Estimate About 10,000 light year
Venus seen by the Venus Express probe - Venus seen by Venus Express spacecraft - Faux-colored image obtained on July 23, 2007 by the Venus Express probe at a distance of 35,000 km from the planet. Supernova 1987A in the Great Magellan Cloud before and after explosion - Sometime during 23 February 1987 a supernova exploded in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a nearby galaxy. However, the LMC is about 170,000 light years distant, so the supernova exploded 170,000 years ago. It was discovered the following day and brightened rapidly to become the first supernova to be easily visible to the unaided eye for almost 400 years. This photograph shows the field around the site of the supernova in great detail, both before the supernova exploded (right) and about 10 days afterwards, when it was still brightening. The image of the star that exploded to create the supernova (mouseover the image) is elongated (better seen on this bigger image). This does not necessarily indicate any peculiarity or a close companion, rather it is the effect of stars being by chance aligned along the line of sight. Several other examples can be seen in this picture and other, different, blended images are seen in the photograph of the same field taken two weeks after the supernova appeared (left). The pre-supernova plates were taken over about 90 minutes on the night of 1984 February 5, centred on the Tarantula nebula. The post - supernova plates (LHS image) were exposed for a total of about an hour on the night of 1987 March 8
