Colliding neutron stars and gravitational waves - Colliding neutron stars and gravitational waves: Artist's view of two colliding neutron stars about to merge and explode in kilonova. This type of event produces gravitational waves and a gamma ray burst. This artist's impression shows two tiny but very dense neutron stars at the point at which they merge and explode as a kilonova. Such a very rare event is expected to produce both gravitational waves and a short gamma-ray burst, both of which were observed on 17 August 2017 by LIGO-Virgo and Fermi/INTEGRAL respectively. Subsequent detailed observations with many ESO telescopes confirmed that this object, seen in the galaxy NGC 4993 about 130 million light-years from the Earth, is indeed a kilonova. Such objects are the main source of very heavy chemical elements, such as gold and platinum, in the Universe
Tungouska event -Artist's view-2/3 - Tunguska Valley - Artist view (2/3) - On June 30, 1908 a car, several ten metres in diameter, exploded over the Tounguska region of Siberia. 2000 km of forest and taiga were destroyed, blown by the shock wave of the car. The explosion was heard up to 1500 km. Just after seven in the morning of June 30, 1908 a huge fireball appeared over the region, and detonated as it hit the upper atmosphere. The explosion broke windows over 500 miles away. There were some herdsmen and hunters in the area at the time who were able to provide eyewitness accounts of what became known as the Tunguska Event. Many would later die from what appears to have been radiation exposure
Space debris - Artist view - Space debris - Artist view - Approximately 11,000 objects over 10 cm have been identified around the Earth. Most of these debris is in low orbit. The number of debris between 10 cm and 1 cm in diameter, greater than 100,000; particles less than 1 cm must exceed 10 million. Approximately 11,000 objects larger than 10 cm are known to exist around the Earth. The estimated population of particles between 1 and 10 cm in diameter is greater than 100,000. The number of particles smaller than 1 cm probably exceeds tens of millions
Telescope E-ELT -Artist's view - E-ELT concept: Artist's view of the E-ELT (European Extremely Large Telescope), a telescope project measuring 39 metres in diameter. Its main mirror will consist of 906 hexagonal mirrors assembled together, and its total surface will be equal to that of a football field. The Cerro Amazones mountain in the Chilean desert, near Eso's Paranal Observatory, will be the site for the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), which, with its 39-metre diameter mirror, will be the world's biggest eye on the sky. Here, an artist's rendering shows how the telescope will look on the mountain when it is complete in 2024
The probes Osiris-Rex and Hayabusa 2 - Artist's view - Osiris-rex and Hayabusa 2 - Artwork: Artist's view of the probe Osiris-Rex near the asteroid Bennu (right) and the probe Hayabusa 2 near the asteroid (162173) Ryugu (upper left). OSIRIS-REX was launched on 8 September 2016 to reach the asteroid Bennu in 2018 and bring a sample back to Earth in 2023. Hayabusa 2 is a space probe of JAXA, the Japanese space agency, launched in December 2014, which will study the asteroid (162173) Ryugu from July 2018 to February 2019 and bring a sample to Earth in December 2020. Osiris-rex will travel to a near-earth asteroid called Bennu and bring a small sample back to Earth for study. It was launched on Sep 8, 2016. As planned, the spacecraft will reach its asteroid target in 2018 and return a sample to Earth in 2023. Hayabusa2 is an asteroid sample return mission operated by the Japanese space agency, JAXA. Launched in December 2014 Hayabusa 2 is expected to arrive at the asteroid 162173 Ryugu in July 2018, survey the asteroid for a year and a half, depart in December 2019, and return to Earth in December 2020

James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) - Artist View - The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) - Artist view - The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will replace the Hubble Space Telescope in 2014. Equipped with a 6.5 m mirror, he will observe the universe mainly in infrared. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a large, infrared - optimized space telescope scheduled for launch in 2014. Equipped with a large mirror 6.5 meters (21.3 feet) in diameter, it will find the first galaxies that formed in the early Universe, connecting the Big Bang to our own Milky Way Galaxy and will reside in an orbit about 1.5 million km (1 million miles) from the Earth
The disappearance of dinosaurs - Artist view - Tylosaur and KT Event - Artist view - Impact of the asteroid responsible for the disappearance of dinosaurs about 65 million years ago. In the foreground, a tylosaurus, a large carnivorous marine lezard. The very end of the Mesozoic is marked by evidence of a devastating asteroid impact 65 million years ago, which is termed the KT event, referring to the Cretaceous (K) -Tertiary (T) transition. This impact likely contributed to the demise of the dinosaurs, although recent findings call into question how decisive the blow actually was. In this image, a huge tylosaur, a relative of today's varanid lizards such as the Komodo dragon, faces its last few minutes of existence in a Texas lagoon. Over the horizon looms the rising ejecta from the KT impact, which occurred in what is today the Yucatan

Planetary system around Trappist-1 - Artist's impressions of the TRAPPIST-1 planetary system: Artist's view of extrasolar planets around the red dwarf star TRAPPIST-1. At least seven exoplanets the size of the Earth are orbiting this star 40 light years ago in the constellation Aquarius. All could contain water. This artist's impression shows several of the planets orbiting the ultra-cool red dwarf star TRAPPIST-1. New observations, when combined with very sophisticated analysis, have now yielded good estimates of the densities of all seven of the Earth-sized planets and suggest that they are rich in volatile materials, probably water
Mars - Illustration - Mars - Illustration - Artist's view of the planet Mars. The three volcanoes of Tharsis and Olympus Mons are visible on the left. In the centre is the great canyon Valles Marineris. A “” full””” Mars. In this image the massive volcano Olympus Mons is clearly visible upper left of center, while near center are the three Tharsis Montes volcanoes. All these volcanoes are believed to be extinct. To the right of the Tharsis Montes are the deep canyons of Valles Marineris, a meandering network of channels as long as the United States is wide. Mars has been known historically as a bright, reddish “” star”” in Earth's sky. The ruddy hue is due to the presence of iron oxide (i.e., rust) on the martian surface. Mars is often host to white clouds of water - ice crystals (like the high - altitude cirrus clouds on Earth) and experiences seasonal dust storms that can cover the entire planet

Asteroides threaten the Earth - Artist view - Asteroids threatening the Earth - Artist view - Title: Space Situational Awareness - Near Earth Objects Picture caption: The SSA-NEO system is based on syndicating and federating observation and tracking data provided by a large number of European and international sources. The key components include: -Observatories and astronomers with telescopes of various sizes, both professional and amateur -A central SSA-NEO data centre, the 'Small Bodies Data Centre', which uses astrometric measurements collected by the Minor Planet Center (USA) -An analysis capability to predict possible impact locations and assess dangers -Analyses related to risk mitigation, including the possible deflection of an asteroid -A system for issuing warnings and alerts to civil authorities in Europe Data on NeOS are collected from telescopes and radar systems worldwide. Each of these submit observations to the Minor Planet Center (MPC), operated by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) at Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, which acts as a central clearing house for asteroid and comet observations. The measurements collected there are retrieved by the European Small Bodies Data Centre; orbits and miss distances are computed. In case of high-risk impact predictions, the data will be cross-checked with NASA's SENTRY system, operated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California, before issuing alerts

The First Trees on Earth - Artist View - First Trees - Artist view - 385 million years ago, in the upper Devonian, the first trees began to appear on Earth. In this illustration, the archaeopteris, considered the first tree, is present at different stages of its evolution, with on the left a young specimen of 6 metres, in the centre a tree twice as large, on the right, an even older specimen. At the extreme right, a strain of an old Archaeopteris collapse. 385 million years ago, near the end of the Devonian period, the first trees began to populate the Earth. Considered the first modern trees, the Archaeopteris were a part of the Earth's primitive forests for the next 25 million years. Unlike the trees we know today, Archaeopteris was in fact a primitive fern that reproduced by means of spores instead of seeds. While terrestrial plants had been around for 130 million years prior to Archaeopteris, this was the first plant to solve the biomechanical challenges of supporting and nurturing ever larger sizes, enabling these Archaeopteris to grow to heights of 70 feet and more, over twice the height of the Calamites. In this image, four stages of the life of the Archaeopteris are illustrated. On the far left nearest our vantage point is a young, 20 - foot Archaeopteris, and in the center at twice that height is a medium - aged Archaeopteris, and on the right is a fully mature specimen. Furthest right is the collapsed and decaying trunk of a mature tree, a contribution the biomassy that will eventually become the oil, coal and natural gas we exploit today

Satellite Planck. Illustration - Artist's view of the European satellite Planck separating from the upper floor of the Ariane V rocket, 30 minutes after its launch. This satellite measures temperature fluctuations in the fossil radiation of the primordial universe. Planck separates from upper stage. Planck separated from the launcher about 30 minutes after launch, a couple of minutes after Herschel. The two spacecraft independently headed towards their respective orbits around the second Lagrange point of the Sun - Earth system (L2), some 1.5 million km from Earth in the direction opposite to the Sun. Planck is the first european mission to study the relic radiation from the Big Bang. Ever since the detection of small fluctuations in the temperature of this radiation, called Cosmic Microwave Background, astronomers have used the fluctuations to understand both the origin of the Universe and the formation of galaxies
E.DEORBIT: a satellite to clean up space - E.Deorbit grabbing debris - Artist view of the satellite e.deorbit (right) catching a satellite with a net to take it to consume in the Earth's atmosphere. e.Deorbit is a European mission project that if approved in 2019 will start in 2024. This satellite will be the first to clean up space debris. He would recapture the larger objects with his articulated arm or a net, before discharging them into the atmosphere, or they would be destroyed. ESA's proposed e.Deorbit mission, shown right, using a net to catch a derelict satellite - the baseline capture method for what would be the world's first active space debris removal mission, in 2024. The mission would first rendezvous with a large, drifting ESA satellite, then capture and secure it safely ahead of steering the combination down for a controlled burn-up in the atmosphere. As well as the baselined robot arm, additional capture technologies are being investigated, including a net and harpon. In any case, grappling the derelict satellite would have to be done in a very rapid and precise manner to prevent E.Deorbit and its target rebounding apart. The mission, being developed through ESA's Clean Space initiative - tasked with safeguarding terrestrial and orbital environments - will be proposed for final agreement at ESA's next Council at Ministerial Level, in 2019. It will place European industry at the forefront of the world's active debris removal efforts and multipurpose space tugs

Mars and Deimos - Illustration - Mars and Deimos - Illustration - Artist's view of Deimos, the smallest of Mars's two satellites. This is how Mars and its even smaller satellite Deimos might appear from a distance of about 100 miles from the surface of Deimos. Deimos is over Acidalia Planitia, an albedo feature that has been observed by Earth - bound astronomers since the 19th century. To the southwest are the fog - filled canyons of Valles Marineris, the westernmost of which are still in darkness. Beyond Mars, immediately to the left of its night side, is Phobos at a distance of 20,000 miles. The two bright objects in the lower left are the stars Beta Gruis and Al Nair in the southern constellation Grus. Like it's larger companion Phobos, Deimos does not possess enough mass to pull itself into a sphere; its shape instead is oblong with a length of about 10 miles and only 6 miles wide at its smallest dimension. Like Phobos, Deimos may be an asteroid long ago captured by Mars' gravity. Orbiting 14,600 miles above Mars' surface, Deimos completes one revolution every 30 hours
Tunguska event -Artist view-3/3 - Tunguska valley - Artist view (3/3) - Artist view of the Tungouska region a few minutes after the explosion, June 30, 1908. 2000 km of forest and taiga were destroyed, blown by the shock wave of the car. Precisely what the Tunguska Event was remains a mystery. Despite the enormous scale of the explosion, there was no impact crater. Instead some 2000 sq/kms of taiga forest was flattened like matchwood and incinerated. This is the scene some minutes after the explosion. Most of the forest has been blown away, the few remaining stumps are burning and the air is full of acrid smoke. June 30 190

Impact of an asteroid on the Yucatan - Yucatan impact - Artist view - Artist view of the impact of the asteroid that would have fallen on the Yucatan peninsula about 65 million years ago. This asteroid 10 km in diameter would be responsible for the disappearance of dinosaurs. An asteroid 5-10 miles across impacts in the Yucatan to end the age of dinosaurs 65 million years ago. A fine layer of clay, rich in the element iridium - more concentrated in meteorites than in terrestrial rocks - marks the geological boundary between the Cretaceous and Tertiary eras. This clay layer is believed to have precipitated out of a plant-blanketing cloud of dust that was ejected into the atmosphere by the impact and subsequent fires. The dust darkened and cooled the earth so much that many species became extinct
