Charles Ginner's unusual view shows the ramshackle margins of a stony beach with telephone wires criss-crossing the scene (it was very rare indeed for these to be included in landscape views). Ginner began painting this kind of ordinary, semi-urban subject matter at the time he joined the Camden Town Group of artists in London in 1911. The impetus for the mosaic of bright colours and strong surface pattern came particularly from the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh. Ginner had worked in France, and knew the work of Post-Impressionist artists;
