John Dobson (1787-1865) was the North East's most outstanding 19th century architect. He designed Central Station (opened 1850) and many of the Greek Revival style buildings along the east side of Grey Street. He also designed country houses in Northumbria. Dobson was also a skilled watercolour painter. He was friendly with the North East portrait painter William Dixon, who probably painted this picture. The two men had worked together on a painted stage backdrop for the theatre at Newcastle;
