Image description

Hezekiah's Tunnel, or the Siloam Tunnel (Hebrew: נִקְבַּת השילוח‎, Nikbat HaShiloah) is a tunnel that was dug underneath the City of David in Jerusalem in ancient times. Its popular name is due to the most common hypothesis of its origin, namely that it dates from the reign of Hezekiah of Judah (late 8th and early 7th century BCE) and corresponds to the waterworks mentioned in 2 Kings 20:20 in the Bible. The inscription was discovered in the early 1880’s and the squeeze (an impression made by pressing damp paper into the inscription) was made by Captain Claude R. Conder and Lietuenant Mantell both of the Royal Engineers, who were in Jerusalem in 1881 awaiting permission from the Ottoman authorities to begin their survey of transjordan for the PEF.
