View of Logan Rock, near the Land's End, 1824 (hand coloured litho on paper)
Artist: James Tonkin (1757-1846)
View of Logan Rock, Land's End, Penzance. Published by John Pope Vibert (1790-1865) (lithographer) and James Tonkin (1757-1846) November 16, 1824. The Logan Rock, near the village of Treen in Cornwall, is an example of a rocking stone. Although it weighs some 80 tons, it was dislodged in 1824 by a group of British seamen, intent on showing what the Navy could do. However following complaints from local residents for whom the rock had become a tourist attraction and source of income, the seamen were forced to restore it. `This celebrated Logan Rock, which is calculated to weigh 80 tons, was forced from its equilibrium on the 8th, April:1824, through the excessive vibration given to it by the united manual exertions of nine persons: It was restored to its former situation on the 2nd. of November following, by the skilful application of Machinery, and the labour of upwards of fifty persons, under the sole direction of Lieutenant Goldsmith, R.N.'
