Haile Selassie I, Emperor of Abyssinia, at Haifa in 1936. Photograph, 1936. Haile Selassie inspecting a guard of honour from B Company 1st Battalion Loyal Regiment (North Lancashire) on the quayside on his arrival in Haifa on board the British cruiser HMS Enterprise, May 1936. Haile Selassie had fled to Djibouti after the Italian invasion of Abyssinia in 1936. The Royal Navy transported the Emperor to Palestine where he visited Jerusalem. After two weeks he continued on to exile in England, returning to his home in 1941 when Italian forces were defeated.
